I believe that 1 Cor. 9:24 is referring more to the battle within a person.....to choose right or wrong.....salvation or damnation....

they battle (or race) they have with themselves and their temptations....just my 2 cents thou

I was referring to Paul's comparison to Olympics;  Paul does not imply that we have to beat other Christians - just saying that that is one difference between the Olympic games and the Christian life.

Yet another one of your I-believes, detached from reality . . .
It's clear enough from the context that Paul is speaking of living a disciplined Christian life of practical holiness, and not some mythical "inner battle." Specifically, he ties his self-discipline into his work as a missionary, preaching the Gospel.
