Does the biblical admonition to "be Holy as I am Holy" create peace or frustration when coupled with the knowledge that we cannot actually be as He is this side of glory?

It creates in me a personal attitude that even though I will not get there until heaven, I am not allowed to settle for less in my life.  Clearly, I have so far to go...I have to be intentional in surrendering to the Holy Spirit and be led by Him & filled by Him...so that I will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Frustration in the sense that, like Paul, I want to be rid of this propensity to do that which I shouldn't, but peace knowing that...

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ

I agree with both T-bone and Alayman on this one.  :o

Though we won't get there in this life, we should do the best we can, and with practice and God's help, our best will become better, if not perfect.

You just need to spend more time on your bus route, you stinkin' deadbeat!

That and sitting under the "man-0-gwad" and let his holiness ooze out all over you! :o

If you stinkin' liberals would tighten up your taper or put on some hose (whichever applies) maybe God would see fit to give you a special filling too!

2Co 7:1  Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Considering the great emphasis the New Testament places on holiness, godliness and righteousness, my answer would be no.  The truth is not contained in only one verse.

Part of the reason we are having to deal with such vile sinfulness among our own members today is the acceptance promoted by the idea that since all of us are imperfect, our various imperfections are really no big deal.  Men begin to justify themselves by measuring themselves by the deeds and failures of other men.  God set a higher goal for us to strive to attain, to stretch out to meet.

The great Apostle Paul, with all of his sacrifices, labors, visions, and usefulness as a vessel yielded to the LORD, still said he had not "attained."  But that did not keep him from reaching out to attempt that goal.  "Sinless perfection" while we are still in this fleshly body is plainly bad doctrine.  But that should not be used as an excuse for us to just wallow in the mire of unholiness.

Which is why I commented on the other thread when just the word "Holiness" was used when what was meant was a particular denominational movement.  According to Titus, the true teaching of Grace will lead us to live "soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world."

1Thess 4:7  For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

I say both.  Frustration as long as you endeavor to be thus on your own power; Peace when you rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross and are granted the righteousness of Christ.

There are two attributes of the Lord that cause me to be in awe....His holiness and His mercy.  When our choir sings about either, I am so choked up I can not form the words.

Thanks for all the good replies.
