The giving of honorary degrees is hardly reserved for IFB's.
Real colleges and universities great them regularly!

True, but typically as a recognition of that person's contribution to their field or to society, and it is not recognized as having the same standing as an earned degree. For example, I perused the last 20 years of honorary doctorates here at the University of Ottawa, and names I recognize include a number of persons who have made significant contributions to Canada: former prime ministers (Paul Martin, Jean Chretien), former Governors General (Romeo Leblanc, Adrienne Clarkson) as well as the present one (David Johston), other significant political figures, astronauts (Julie Payette, Marc Garneau), philanthropists (Dave Smith), and entertainment figures (Christopher Plummer, Alex Trebek).

I suppose that if fundydom wants to confer honorary doctorates to fundys for their contribution to fundyness, that's their prerogative.  It's just kind of like awarding a sixth-grader the title of "King of Recess" - it sounds impressive, but that's about it.

I got my doctorate from P.I.C.K.L.E. University but never sent any of my students there. In order for that to happen, I would need to be given placement on the Board or, perhaps, a Regional Vice President position.

THAT is the REAL inside dope!  ;)

i have one of those too.....  8)........

Hope everyone understands that this Honorary Doctorate stuff only happens on the Hyles side of the IFB.

The title is Honorary Doctorates.... you really can not compare that with an earned doctorate.  Many schools give them, yes, even outside the IFB world.  They say right on them (including HAC's) that it is honorary.

It may be foolish to use the title, but not dishonest, unless they are performing surgery with their honorary degree.  I am sure that people that think it is dishonest to use something they did not earn have returned all monetary gifts given to them and have never used the gravy bowl given to them for an anniversary.

HAC gave one to a horse....so it is safe to say there is a problem in that realm.  One recipient refused to take the title of "Dr" but was told in no uncertain terms by Schaap that he would be addressed as such.  There is a little fixation on the title, but is usually by those who could never obtain an earned doctorate, they are easy to spot, they are the one's "supervising" or there for the "photo-op".

It is a gift of appreciation, usually from your Alma-mater, really nothing more.  Kind of like a #1 dad shirt...or World's Greatest Dad shirt.

Who is the greatest?

"No problem, Jack. And in return, in no uncertain terms you will be addressed as 'the convicted kiddy-fiddler.' After all, one good turn deserves another!"

How the Dr. thing works in IFBdom...

In te 60s...70s... 80s... Pillsbury Baptist Bible College gave the new pastors of 1st Baptist Church in Rockford an honorary doctorate.

Why? Because that church was influential and sent generations of kids to Pillsbury.

I know a former Rockford pastor that got one of those doctorates and he did not use the title... ever.

By the mid 90s, Rockford's church was diminished in membership. Guess what?! Yep! No more doctorates :)

You don't have to accomplish anything in IFBdom. All you need to do is become the pastor of a gravy train.
We did the same thing in Hammond, but occaisionally we threw in one for entertainment purposes, which  lessened our already suspect DD' s value.

And what about the biblical command for a bishop to be “blameless?” I often wondered about this when it came to Paul Chappell and others like him. I would ask, “If they are being dishonest with the titles they are using, what else are they being dishonest about?” To date, not one defend of theirs has ever answered my question on its merit.

Hey, good to see you here again! Hope all is well with you.

And I agree that flaunting a fake degree is a dishonest thing to do.

An Honorary Doctorate from any of these places would give me no sense of accomplishment.

Especially a place that would give a horse one.

The last 10 years or so.... it seems that most of the IFBdum "Doctors"..... are claiming honorary degrees from Philippine mission works where they start a "college". They need more and more support to run it. No wonder they are turning into honorary doctorate mills.

Wow, Dr. T-Bone, who would have thought? Certainly no ones who knows me.  See you all later I am off to Kinkos to get some new business cards!  8)

You can go to documentic.com and design and print out your own doctorate. You can be a doctor of anything you want from any institution you want, even from the Bigwheel School Of Divinity, which can really show your importance. This shows that you are really a bigwheel.

Well, that's fine. From what I've seen of the curricula of these places - not to mention a good number of their alumni - it looks like earning a diploma isn't much of an accomplishment, either.

According to Wikipedia, only a university can bestow an honorary doctorate. Most of them make the recipient promise not to use the title "Doctor."

Christian work is measured in decades not days.

I want one now so how much must one give to "get" one.
