you wouldn;t think so if you had ever suffered from it yourself.......and you would think jokes about it should be beneath a christian........ but i have seen enough of hac grads and other super fundies post on how they believe mental illness is b.s. and the condition that causes hearing voices is demon possession to know very few of you understand anything about it so you choose to make crude jokes at the sufferers expense............ so no........i don;t think anything i said was over the top at all......... i;m deadly serious about it...... you have no idea how hard i work to be able to function at even half normal..... and it wouldn;t be possible at all without many carefully administered and a diligently adhered to schedule of medications... ......  i had no idea that when you guys said someone was.. "off their meds".... you were actually making a joke and comparing them to someone who suffers a very serious and debilitating condition...............

Along with James, Romans 14:4 rejects the authority of those who judge:

"Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand."

A common belief, which we are also seeing on this forum, is that if the people judging are furious enough, their accusations must be true. But Paul, as well as James, rebukes the pride of those who judge. Since God is not with them, their judging is based on their own authority-- not on God, not on truth, not on what actually happened. As Paul explained earlier in Romans, people who judge are only seeing their own sins in someone else.

Jesus instructed us to "judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgement" - we are to judge righteously, not on our emotion, but on the solid foundation of the Scriptures.  In matters where the Scripture is silent, we should allow Christian liberty.

This passage is describing the judging of one's  preferences.

The ability to judge correctly, is a result of seeking God/wisdom...

Pro 28:5
5 Evil men understand not judgment:
but they that seek the Lord understand all things.

Psa 37:6
6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light,
and thy judgment as the noonday.

Psa 119:66
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge:
for I have believed thy commandments.

23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor:

Prophet, in the passages you cited, none of the Hebrew words translated "judgment" are identical to the Greek word translated "judge."

The different Hebrew words refer to crime and its punishment, the ability to give advice, etc., but NEVER do they refer to the ability to evaluate another person's spirituality.

Even without using the original languages, Romans 14 clearly rebukes those who judge, while defending those being judged, even when the person judging is right.

God tells us to care for the poor, and if someone criticizes that it is "only social work," he is not speaking Scripturally. And the fact that some of these people are getting saved is wonderful.

Submission to God's authority produces humility, and another way to submit to God's authority is to obey His commands not to speak evil of one another.

Titus 3:2 tells us "to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men."

People who travel around the forum throwing insults are disobeying a group of commands, not just one.

James 4:11 unites disobedience to God's command not to judge with disobedience to God's command not to speak evil of the brethren: Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

A person who speaks evil of another Christian is sitting as judge over God's law, rejecting God's commands.

Proverbs 3:34 is a rather interesting verse. Its too bad so many people get stuck with the KJV. Peter quotes Proverbs 3:34 in 1 Peter 5:5. The old Greek text of Proverbs reads

The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble.

This matches 1 Peter 5:5 perfectly.

1Pe 5:5  Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

You might want to reconsider your source for "scorn"!!!

Vince... read again. Peter is quoting Proverbs 3:34. Your "bible" doesn't have the correct translation in Proverbs 3:34. Proverbs 3:34 isn't about the scornful.

Actually, Praise, I'm not using the "bible"; I'm using a translation--the New King James Version. I like its mostly-accurate translation of the Hebrew Masoretic and Greek Received Texts. The New King James Version states "Surely He scorns the scornful," and SURELY God does scorn scorners.

But I respect your courteous tone and research, so I looked in the New International Version. Now, this conservative Southern Baptist translation uses (in my opinion) inferior texts, but it strives for accuracy by translating the thought, more than the words. It tells us "He mocks proud mockers..."

Okay. The NKJ says that God scorns the scornful. The NIV says that He mocks the mockers.

The Masoretic text is wrong. The Old Greek text is what Peter quoted. The Greek Received Text you mentioned in 1 Peter 5:5 witnesses to the validity of the LXX text in Proverbs 3:34.

Its not that difficult to understand. The MT texts isn't always accurate. The MT is a late 9th century source. Even older Hebrew texts witness to a slightly different source of the OT in various places. It'll do you good to do some research into Codex Alexandrinus.
