Humility

Okay, Praise, I think I follow your thinking. By the way, I do not get upset at people with courteous disagreements, and I appreciate the research and help that Praise is providing.

Like English, Hebrew and Greek words have different shades of meaning. The Masoretic Text correctly states that God surely scorns scorners.

Many Christians are surprised to learn that the New Testament rarely quotes the Old Testament. Huh?!? The OT is written in Hebrew, while the NT is written in Greek. NT citations of the OT often are the meanings, or a combination of texts, rather than exact quotes. Being inspired by God, Peter was correct in stating that God resists the proud, but that does not mean that every other shade of meaning in wrong.

The NIV is correct in stating that God mocks the mockers, the NKJ is correct in stating that God scorns the scorners, and the LXX is correct in stating that God resists the proud. It is not a case of one translation proves that all the other translations are wrong.

The NT writers very often quoted the OT exactly. Jesus Himself is recorded saying "it is written" 23 times across the 4 Gospels. Add the other NT authors and you get 63 times the phrase "it is written" is mentioned. Paul often quoted or alluded to Jeremiah or Lamentations. Peter made use of Proverbs and Psalms. Jude even quoted Enoch.

No offense, but you really have very little idea of what you're talking about.

Act 26:22  Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

Another way to submit to God's authority is to obey His command not to scorn.

Proverbs 3:34 tells us "Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble."

We have already seen that God gives grace to the humble, which produces the ability to serve God successfully. Now we see that SURELY, God scorns scorners.

There is no judging here--SURELY God scorns the scornful. There is little opening for a scorner to succeed in God's work, because SURELY He scorns the scornful.

We have seen elsewhere that God upholds those who are being judged, even if they are wrong, but SURELY He scorns the scornful.

Brethren, we are getting strong assurance here: SURELY, He scorns the scornful.

Proverbs 3:34 is a rather interesting verse. Its too bad so many people get stuck with the KJV. Peter quotes Proverbs 3:34 in 1 Peter 5:5. The old Greek text of Proverbs reads

The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble.

This matches 1 Peter 5:5 perfectly.

1Pe 5:5  Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

You might want to reconsider your source for "scorn"!!! :)

Proverbs 3:34  The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble. Brenton's English LXX.

Proverbs 3:34(37)  The Lord opposes the arrogant, But He gives grace to the humble. Orthodox Study Bible.

This is one of my favorite Bibles. NKJV NT and new English translation of the LXX for the OT. When you read this Bible almost all the quotes form the OT can be found nearly word for word. So much better than the Masoretic text alone. Check it out. It does not seem to be well known.

Submitting to God's authority produces humility, and one way to submit to God's authoriyy is to obey His commands not to scorn.

Psalm 1 tells us:

Blessed is the man Who... Nor sits in the seat of the scornful...And whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalm 1 gives three things that disqualify a person from being blessed, and scorning is one of them. He then gives two characteristics that guarantee success--scorning, judging, and speaking evil of the brethren are not included.

Readers, you can have the success that comes from being blessed by God. And you can have the success that comes from disobeying His commands not to scorn. But you can't have both.

236 hits in less than 48 hours. I want to thank the people who have lasted through the hostility.

Proverbs 3:34 tells us that SURELY He scorns the scorners..." How and why is this?

Proverbs 14:6 tells us--"A scorner seeks wisdom and does not find it..." A scorner is not a source of spiritual wisdom and growth.

As a Christian high school teacher, I had to deal with scornful students who excelled in snappy cool insults, put-downs, and ridicule. They would frighten other students away from Godliness. Why should a student who wanted to be Godly listen to them? Or respect them? Or fear them?

And why should you?

What hostility?

You're just repeating yourself. No one cares to read the same thing over and over and over. Especially from someone who ignored the obvious and pretends they have the answer.

Sorry, Praise, but God is blessing this series. A lot more readers than I suspected are learning from it.

You are delusional. You are talking about humlity like it is something you are familiar with. When is your book coming out? 'Humility: And how I obtained it?' By "the humble" Vince Massi.

No, Balaam, I've seen that God is blessing me in teaching against judging, speaking evil, and scorn. And I'm afraid that the number of hits backs up that claim.

People who disobey God's commands not to scorn have been a blight in many areas of Christianity.

Proverbs 3:34 tells us that SURELY He scorns the scorners..." How and why is this?

Proverbs 14:6 tells us--"A scorner seeks wisdom and does not find it..." A scorner is not a source of spiritual wisdom and growth. You shouldn't listen to scorners.

Have you ever read about a haughty spirit? You are the epitomy of sactimonious false piety. It is sickening! But just keep bragging about how humble you are. Yup, you are a hacker vineyardite allright.

Mr. Massi, the number of views is not an accurate number for statistical purposes on a forum such as this one.  I, myself, could be responsible for 100 views or more over the 14 pages of this particular thread.  You see, in my free time in the evenings, I listen to the radio as I surf the internet.  I read this forum from top to bottom.  Then I start over again, looking for new posts.  I read all the new posts, then I start over again.  You get the idea.  Every time I click into a thread, it counts as a view.  But it's not a unique view, because I'm just rubbernecking and following the conversation in (close to) real time, truth be told.  I doubt I'm the only member/lurker who surfs this way, and each one of us skews the numbers...exponentially.

Please don't misconstrue the view count as proof of God's blessing upon the teaching.  Because it's a grossly inaccurate measure.  And claiming such only serves to lower your credibility with those who understand the mechanics of forums such as this one.

Submitting to God's authority produces humility, which produces grace, which produces success in God's work. Obeying God's commands not to scorn is one way to submit to God's authority.

Scorners are not blessed by God, are actually scorned by God, cannot find wisdom, and do not listen to rebuke.

Proverbs 19:25 tells us that a scorner is the opposite of person with understanding: "Strike a scorner, and the simple will become wary; Rebuke one who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge." Remember that a scorner will not listen to rebuke--the blessing in this verse is not available to scorners.

Glory to God!

Yesterday they fenced up the park where we have our Saturday Bible Study. The problem with moving it to the church is that my van can't hold all the route kids plus the walk-ins. But an AOG college student showed up in his compact, and God gave us thirty kids!

Readers, you can have the success that comes from God blessing you. And you can have the success that comes from judging, speaking evil, and scorning.

But you can't have both.

Care to define "scorning"?

Psalm 34:2 tells us "My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad."

Notice that the Psalmist is boasting, but he is giving God the glory for what happened. Humble people will be glad to hear it. Why?

Humble people have grace, which gives them the ability to succeed in God's work. Rather than give in to judging, speaking evil, and scorn, they are happy to see God blessing someone else.

No he wouldn't and can't. Scorning is something other people do.

"No, he wouldn't and can't. Scorning is something other people do." Got me two out of three, Balaam.

Psalm 34:2 tells us "My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad."

Humility is never to be declared by self or it can't be humility...humility is always observed and appreciated by others!
