i love good rock n roll music.... ..(good rock n roll that is).. ..... but there is a place and time for it... and there is a place and time where it doesn;t belong.... ... personally i don;t believe rock n roll belongs in church.... and while that may be a highly controversial stand... especially for someone my age..... there are other places where rock n roll is used as a back drop, that i believe is equally inappropriate... and in which i don;t see a need for any music of any kind at all to be used ....... .
for example.... i recently cancelled subsciption to the outdoor channel on cable..... ....
a few years ago i loved watching it ...and especially loved the bowhunting shows where you could actually see the entire stance of a bowhunter and the prey he or she had carefully stalked....any talking was done before they headed out on the hunt and they had people with them who were experts moving quietly with them and also experts at good camera work... .... .. the back ground was so silent you could imagine hearing the snow fall.... . ......
but in recent years those types of shows have disappeared to be replaced by loud and obnoxious hunting shows every one of which has an over bearing rock n rock back ground theme that doesn;t even try to fit the atmosphere... . (as if rock n roll actually could fit it).... .. but when it comes to hunting shows i don;t think any music would fit..... as any hunter knows - hunting is a "silence is golden" operation..... .. but the guys on the outdoor channel these days chatter the whole time they are on the hunt.... (and when fishing too).... with their faces stuck so close in the camera you can;t tell what kind of gun or bow they are using even after they take the shot..... . and every show is the same... somebodys scruffy face plastered in the camera while he talks... or sometimes whisperes ... about hunting.... only the music is different.... ....
i watched 3 shows recently where a trio of guys bowhunted for elk.... they actually did hunt on the move and stalked their prey.... (or at least walked around looking for prey)..... they whispered back and forth to each other occasionally stumbling over obstacles in their way, for 30 minutes each show...... carrying their gadget laden compound bows.... .. and then in all 3 shows they wrapped up by bemoaning the fact they failed to even see one elk much less were able to shoot at one..... ....and they actually seemed surprised by that?.......
the other soon to be cancelled cable channel ..due to it;s over use of rock n roll back drops to virtually every event.. is the cowboy channel..... ..why does a rodeo have to have rock n roll music... (or any music at all. for that matter).... to accompany every single ride in every single event?... .. i thought part of the allure of watching a rodeo event was hearing the sounds that naturally go along with it..... not to hear an abbreviated rock concert every time the chute opens.... ... .... ..thankfully the calgary stampede has yet to succumb to that ridiculous trend... ...so i am keeping the channel until this seasons calgary stampede is finished in late july ... and then that channel will go in the dust bin too..... .
