I'm an old geezer, pushing 82. I attended a Fundamentalist Baptist College and was invoved in Fundamentast Baptist Churches until the late 90s. I've read the FFF off and on since the late 1990s. I'm thankful that the Lord saw fit to remove me from the world of Fundamentalist Baptist, although I went out kicking and screaming. But now, since I have plenty of time to study God's Word the Lord has revamped my theology so that It is based on Jesus Christ and His work and not on the shallowness of a great many IFB church leaders.
I'm just a plowman. aka-Charles, Charlie, Chas--anything but Chuck.

Welcome and Happy Thanksgiving

Welcome to the forum. I look forward to hearing of your perspective from those years inside the bubble.

Thanks for the welcome. When I began Bible college, Jack Hyles had only been at Hammond for about 5 years, so he was just getting entrenched. Falwell was just starting his church in Lynchburg. John R. Rice was the voice for Independent Baptists. Tennessee Temple, where I attended, was just beginning to experience a growth spurt.

Very interesting. Share some of your experiences with us.

Welcome! I've been on this forum since 1998--it was till the "Jack Hyles Forum" at the time--longer than anyone else at this point, I think. I admit I don't remember your username. Did you post at all, perhaps under a different handle? Or were you a lurker?

I went through several names back then and can't recall which one I used. I posted a few times, but mostly read. An evangelist who had been injured in Vietnam was very active at that time. I can't recall his name — Tim? Jarring my memory, George W. Bush had just been elected President, so I may not have been here in the 90s. But I recall Hyles being the predominant focus of conversation. The format was entirely different from what it is now.

Tim Lee, went by “Marine”. Great guy, burned by Jim Vineyard at Oklahoma Baptist College.

welcome to the forum plowman... . i have been around the fff since 2004... probably on that same old format you remember.. .....i was warned way back then the fff was highly addictive and to be careful.. ... i guess i wasn;t careful enough.... .....;)
I strayed away from the FFF about that time, but returned as a reader 10 or so years ago, then decided to rejoin the group so I could see links posted by participants. I'm interested in what is going on in the IFB circle.

Your story is about like mine. I was on the forum for a short time many years ago and then disappeared for many years. I eventually came back as a lurker for quite a few years.

That's it. Thanks for jarring my memory. I just looked him up on the WWW. Apparently, he's still going strong.

A quick story about brother Tim…

Back in that day of the FFF when he participated frequently I was a fairly loyal supporter of most, if not all things Hyles. Of course, Tim Lee was persona non grata with the Hyles crowd because of his “compromise“ via affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention, and such so-called “liberal” drift. However, there was a strong point of alliance that I had with brother Lee, and that was our position against Calvinism.

I went to hear him preach a message at a church about an hour from me, and in that short sermon he preached very evangelistically because, after all, he is called as an evangelist. Many were at the altar call and saved that day, hallelujah!

I really enjoyed the preaching, but as an aside, noted in that sermon how many times he made statements that were contrary to Calvinistic theology, and when I got back home I posted some of those thoughts in a thread where I asked the forum folk to tell me their opinion. In doing so, I conveniently left out the identity of the preacher (bro Tim) who I was posting the quotes from.

Calvinism was one of the hottest topics on the FFF and frequently caused all-out food fights on the forum a daily basis, lol. Quickly after posting his sermon clips, battle lines were drawn, and harsh criticism was offered up. The Calvinists of the forum, several who were prolific posters and friends with brother Lee, quickly retracted, or softened their criticisms out of respect for him once I revealed the source of the quotes.

My point for doing that wasn’t to embarrass anybody, or incite the crowd for entertainment, but to show how harsh and vitriolic our language could be towards our own brethren. It was done in the vein of demonstrating that old axiom “Christians are the only army to shoot their own wounded”. To that end, it succeeded, but it certainly didn’t dramatically change any forum tendencies, unfortunately.

I was probably one of those Calvinists. Marine and I had our go-arounds, but ultimately we got along. I'm looking at a mailing tube by my desk: it contains a poster of Charles Spurgeon in his pulpit that Tim signed and sent me. It's a nice print. Never had the chance to get it mounted or framed... yet.

I follow him on Twitter. He still posts there regularly.

I left in 2011 or so, came back in 2019 I think.
