Is Anime Demonic?

That’s about right.
That’s great to hear. I have been one of the youngest on the forum and I’m in my mid 40s, so that’s kind of sad. If you haven’t done so, there’s a welcome thread on the “fellowship forum” (I think). Drop a post and tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m curious to know what brings a younger adult to a forum of this sort. I was briefly a member of this forum when I was a college student back in the early 2000s, then I think I got kicked off the forum and I disappeared for a couple decades! 😬

We have a very good family friend whose daughter got really obsessed with anime over the past few years, everything from the comic books to the cartoons to the collectibles. We noticed that as she got more and more into it, her personality changed and she became more “goth.” We started to feel almost uneasy around her; quite frankly we questioned whether she was under the influence of some type of demonic spirit.

Interestingly enough, in conversing with her dad recently, he mentioned his now high school daughter had just gotten saved, despite being in church her entire life. I mentioned to him our past concerns about his daughter’s obsession with anime and it being potentially Satanic, and he laughed and said it was interesting that I mentioned that, because his daughter had recently told him that in one room of the house where she had a lot of those items from when she was was a couple years younger, she always felt like there was a demon or spirit in the room. I don’t think they ever connected it to specifically the anime, but they were wondering what it could be.
i don;t think anime is demonic in and of itself.... .. but there are some seriously messed up people creating some of the cartoons.... . and some seriously messed up people reading the more seriously messed up ones too........ ......... sailor moon falls under the anime label... ... and that thing should be banned in my opinion... as well as other anime creations like it... ...

I might have been the youngest in my very brief existence on the old version of the FFF. My best guess is that I was on circa 2002ish. Of course I have no way of knowing this, and for some reason, I feel like there might have been a couple of supposed teens who occasionally posted back then, so if true, I probably wasn’t the youngest regardless. Either way, I hope a few more younger folks do join. I’m getting way too old to be one of the youngest of anything!

What (in your opinion) is the matter with Sailor Moon?

(I have my own thoughts. I'm soliciting yours.)

there are 2 versions of sailor moon.... one relatively innocent and the other pornographic... .. it;s one of the anime cartoons that crosses and confuses the barriers between anime - manga and hentai..... ...there is disagreement about which version came first and which was a parady of the other.... it;s also frequently argued that the biggest audience for both versions of sailor moon is japanese men.... .......i don;t know how it;s viewed in other places but here in hawaii and also in japan if you just mention sailor moon people automatically assume you are talking about the porno version..... .

Thanks for the welcome.

Now, I’m curious to know who here is the oldest.

Not quite. There are indeed two versions of Sailor Moon that were dubbed for English-speaking viewers. The first one was produced in Canada in the mid-1990s and is indeed the "relatively innocent" one that severely downplayed the sexuality aspects, violence, and much of the Japanese-ness of the original. The second version came in the 2000s and restored much of that.

The Japanese version of the anime (like the comic series it's based on) has characteres that are homosexual or androgynous. The Canadian dub did things like changing them to close relatives (inadvertently making things worse in my estimation!), gender-swapping characters to make the relationships straight, or just removing them outright. Brief nudity (showing someone in the bath, for example) is acceptable in Japan, but obviously right out in North America, and so those scenes were altered. And they added a moral lesson tag to the end. It was the 1990s, after all.

The second English dub from 2000s restored the removed content from the previous version. It was intended for streaming sites and home video rather than broadcast TV, so they could get away with keeping the mature themes intact.

it;s also frequently argued that the biggest audience for both versions of sailor moon is japanese men....

May well be. The intended audience for Sailor Moon in Japan was elementary- and middle-school-aged girls. But there's probably enough fanservice to attract a not-insignificant audience of young men who like looking at schoolgirls in short uniforms.

As I said above, we need to be discerning about un-Christian themes in entertainment, and Sailor Moon's tolerance of illicit sexuality is one of those themes to be wary of.

That said, I'd hesitate to call it "pornographic." There are openly gay and androgynous characters, but there's nothing explicit in the program that I recall. (It's been a few years.)

Around here, I would guess Sailor Moon is remembered for the first dub: a generally harmless and silly Saturday-morning cartoon.

Thanks for the welcome.

One man recently joined and claimed to be in his early 80s. I’m not sure if he’s the oldest, but he’s got to be in the running.

when i first came here to hawaii my birth sister told me to avoid japanese men as much as possible.... especially japanese tourists that were men...... ........and then the next thing she wanted.. was for me to learn to speak japanese.... ... i didn;t quite understand that one coz the school i went to was mostly hawaiian and filipino kids.... with only a few white and japanese ones..... ... but what she told me was that japanese men were very sleazy.. ...were unapologetic pedophiles... .. and they were attracted to girls of the age group i was about to enter..... .... she said they were also accomplished liars.... . and the more i could understand about what they were saying when i was around them - the safer i would be..... .. ....

she died about a year later and before i accomplished becoming completely fluent in japanese.... but in the next several years i would learn just how right she had been..... ..... plus a side benefit to learning japanese was that later in junior high and high school i made a lot of friends among japanese girls and in college had japanese friends that were students from japan... .. they didn;t trust japanese men either.... .. and actually told me more disturbing things about them than my sister knew.... ..

somewhere in all that time is where i learned about sailor moon... and was told plenty about it by both the friends i made who grew up in japan and also local japanese friends who grew up in hawaii...... all of what i said about it here are things i learned from them... .i have never studied anything about it myself or researched it....it has all been word of mouth..... . but i have also heard warnings about it and a few other anime creations from sunday school and church..... what most of them all said was that sailor moon was originally created in japan for japanese males all ages... but mostly adults and middle aged men.... who were attracted to school age girls in short skirt uniforms.... although i speak japanese fluently now i do not know how to read the japanese symbols ..... so i can;t read the dialogue on sailor moon posters or comic books... ... not that i would look at them anyway... ..
