Earlier this summer, an astronomical water bill alerted us to a bad leak on the water line running between our water meter and the house. The location of the meter was behind our property on the next street to the north. This meant if we were to replace the line, we'd have to somehow lay nearly 300' of new line at least 36" below ground. Another complication would be working on our neighbor's property for 130' without any easement on record. Not to mention a nearly 60' drop in elevation between the meter and the house. Fortunately, about 10 years ago, the county installed a new main on our street. This only required about 135' of trenching at a rise of 14' and it was all on our property. Even with a $3,200 meter relocation, this was by far the most cost effective solution. BONUS: I saved $2,100 on the installation of the line by trenching it out myself. I rented a mini excavator and dug out about 85% of the trench, but digging the rest by hand then filling it in after installation has left me screaming the same thing Ringo screamed.
