What I have said, I have said. The man has brought reproach upon the name of Christ and has sullied the reputation of his Church due to his lascivious lifestyle and the horrible doctrine he has propagated. It would be one thing if he were just an "average joe" in a small town but his influence was world-wide. To whom much is given, much shall be required!

And yes, I will have to give account of myself and I am horrified at some things I will have to answer for.

No judgment or condemnation of Jimmy Swaggart from me, just pity. I hope he was Saved!

As a matter of fact, we are in a position to judge a person by their actions rather than their words: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits" (Matt. 7:15-16).

The words: Old-school Pentecostalism.

The deeds: A chronic addiction to prostitutes.

Which one speaks louder?

He was always mocking eternal security which made me wonder if he had to get saved again after his ‘confession’ His soteriology more than his sin causes me to wonder.

But, I also have some ambivalence about Taitt.
 
I just think it’s dangerous to play “Monday morning quarterback” with the souls of those we really don’t know. I happen to think it’s far more ridiculous than these people caught up predicting the year of the rapture and such things. I can’t speak for everyone on the forum, but I know I deserve nothing more than hellfire when I die. I’ll never stick my nose up in the air and pretend I’m more righteous than anyone else, nor will I wager comments on fate of the souls of others. In fact, if I did so, I’d be very concerned about my own fate.

How about 1 Tim 5:20: "Them that sin rebuke before all, that others may fear"?

We are not speaking of his spiritual condition regarding whether he is now in Heaven or Hell. I only hope for the best and would not wish Hell on anyone!

Perhaps there was some genuine fruits of repentance on his part (and I do hope so) but after his fall, he ultimately relapsed into his sin, told the public that it was "none of our business," and then slipped off into relative obscurity. This simply does not look good and is not any way I would want to leave this world having such a legacy! It is truly sad, pitiful, and serves as an example to all regarding how we would not want to "finish the race" that is set before us!

Hence my statement: "I wouldn't want to be him right now!"

OK, my apologies then. I misunderstood you. I thought a couple of you were indicating that he was unsaved and in hell. Jimmy was a fallen man like all of us, and there was a degree of hypocrisy there, but I am also guilty of being fallen and having hypocritical behaviors in different periods of my life. Thankfully, I haven’t been exposed to TV cameras and the media when I’ve had these low moments. I now believe you were referring to him having to answer to God for his sins. The older I get, the more I fear the moment I’ll have to do that. I didn’t used to care, but now I do.

I do not purport to know his standing before the Lord.
Only God and evidently Ekk can know another’s heart and motives.

As I was getting started in going to church, I heard Adrian Rogers make a critical comment about flashy showy televangelists... The likes of Jimmy Swaggart and Rex Humbard came to mind... I was very relieved because I didn't like them either. I thought, "I can get into this church thing if I don't have to like these guys."

Yeah, the only commentary I've ever heard about him was negative, particularly (as you've said) of the money-grubbing nature of the TV preachers. You mentioned Humbard, I would have associated such Elmer Gantry types with Ernest Angley. Matter of fact, when I was a kid and absolutely clueless about authentic Christianity my only recollection of memories regarding Sunday morning preachers was Angley and his outlandish healing services. Me and my punk friends used to make fun of Christianity, in a Beavis and Butthead fashion, because ignorantly we thought Angley was representative of mainstream Christians.

I've been saved since 1986 and I don't remember anyone talking positively about him in the circles I run in.
I do remember one preacher in Orange County, CA (who knew I was in his service) preach positively about Jack Hyles and Billy Graham in the same message! Talk about wearing a Confederate tunic and Union breeches!
