Just what does Putin want?

i wrote about this in my thread about live streaming russias attack on ukraine... ...originally he said he expected nato and eastern europe to abide by the agreements made in budapest in the early 1990s when the soviet union dissolved.... but when obama indicated his intention to violate those aggreements he threatened to invade ukraine... actually did invade crimea... . but a lot of things happened along the way from the 1990s to today that have caused the war to become a putin personal obsession.....

but before all that happened ...it should have been obvious what putins reactions would be.... . one reason putin has never wanted to see ukraine get too close to the west is the military forces that came out of ukraine during the cold war years were the backbone of the special forces in the old soviet miitary.... even their regular soldiers were better than soldiers coming from the rest of russia or it;s satellites..... he wanted to retain the ability to put them back into a soviet style russian military if the need ever arose.... ... .....well... that ship sailed long ago.. so now he is probably just trying to save face and avoid what happened to soviet bloc dictators in the past when their over reaching efforts failed......

bottom line where we are concered... ..... i believe leaders of the west should have kept their promise to never move NATO an inch to the east after the agreements were made.... . i;m not trying to absolve russia or putin of blame in the war... or say it would have never happened if - - etc etc.... ... ... but at least it would have given russia nothing to bark about when their leaders decided to bite.....

Ukraine wants to join NATO, and Putin doesn't want NATO right up against Russia's border like that. He has long insisted that Ukraine maintain strict neutrality and give up on joining NATO.

He also fears Russia being encircled by democracies, which would be a refuge for dissidents and a threat to his own power. Ukraine is a foil to the Russian autocracy.

He's probably also trying to re-establish a Russian empire of some kind.

Also doesn't hurt that Ukraine has abundant natural resources, including arable land and lithium.

all that was part of the agreements made when the soviet union dissolved.... and many on both sides believed at the time that NATO.. which was originally created to counter soviet agression... would itself be dissolved once the soviet union became russia again and the agression ceased........

but some within nato saw russia backing off as an invitation to expand.... others started trying to turn screws on russia like it was some kind of justifiable revenge for old offenses..... they set out in ways to humiliate russians in ways that made no sense....... all that stirred up a lot of animosity in russian civilians who up to then had been enthusiastic about making friends with america.... putin promised to give them their dignity back... so they brought back an old kgb agent... the very thing that made their lives miserable during the soviet years.... and made him president.... .. . ...

but even as the situation deteriorated... and all that was happening.... in fact right up until obama was elected - u.s. leaders agreed having a country as corrupt as ukraine become a member of nato would be a mistake even if it didn;t rankle russia to do it...... so trying to put ukraine in NATO made no sense either way it;s looked at....
