It's been years since I've heard him preach, but at the time we heard him in person, he was a solid, Biblical, powerful speaker. Some of my kids were teenagers at the time, and they really liked his preaching, too. His fall is so sad. How awful for his family, too. And what a loss of influence . . . another name to add to the (sadly) growing list of fallen church leaders who bring reproach to the cause of Christ . . .

I understand the idea that within certain ideologies there will be a circling the wagon mentality that will justify anything, even the unjustifiable. All I am saying is that that statement is weird because it seems to imply that there are people that would say “I’m into that kind of thing that Baldwin was doing, and that could’ve been me”. Again, that’s just plain weird to even contemplate.

If I had to guess he’s referring to people within the IFB. I myself have heard people say things like that when talking about a child molester. They don’t say, man that poor kid. They say something like, but for the grace of God there go I.

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12

There is a way to acknowledge a propensity to fall into certain sins without empathizing with someone who has fallen. It's called humility which I think is what is needed amongst those who have the farthest to fall.

I find it an awkward way to state (by the “IFB” in your scenario) that the depth of our sinful depravity is only tempered by the grace of God, but it’s nonetheless at least partially true.

Stupid reformers, empathizing with criminals instead of recognizing their own propensity toward sin, if not for God's mercy.
