Made a BIG Mistake Visiting Revival Meeting

So, the Baptist Church around the corner from my house is having revival meetings. The speaker is the son of a pastor I knew for about 15 years. So, I took my two eldest, one of their friends, and we went last night to hear what he had to say. This, and a tun of old friends were there to see the preacher, so it was kind of nice to catch up with old faces. I kind of expected a half decent message ....

What a BIG mistake.

He ranted and hooted about the "old stuff" that Churches are casting away. Old music mentioning the blood. Old KJV "inspired" Bibles. Old this and old that. He said Christian's need to stand by and protect that old stuff ... bla bla bla. He yelled and hooted and screeched 50+ minutes of nothingness. His text was so off base it wasn't funny. His message was filled with false assumptions .... at one point he said he was against drama ministries in the Church .... and yet his delivery and preaching style was all drama in my book. He made this one loud comment, "The day it is okay for ME (a 300+ lb preacher) to wear a tutu and dance in Church ... i'll be okay for the young girls dancing in Church ... after all, it is all about the younger girl's dancing .... bla bla bla"

It was bad. The whole place was yelling out AMEN and PREACH ON PREACHER!

Oh ... yes ... I did bring a ESV Bible to the meeting.  8)

What a waste if time .... and then my poor wife had to listen to me go on and on about how wrong he was and why .... lol

Sounds like maybe there really is more than one kind of heretic!

I generally like Miller's stuff. Love the last line:

I’ll cling to Jesus and try my best.

That is EXACTLY what was missing last night. 50 minutes of "cling to the old ways" and never was their great mention (or mention at all) of the true timeless Savior that we cling to. He was spitting up and yelling about how the teens should cling to the old time Baptist ways ... and yet, what he should have said was "cling to Jesus" ..... and sadly this wasn't said or even emphasized really in any way. I guess that's just too much freedom to give someone.

Exactly! A revival should be all about Jesus.

While hooting and hollering about the KJV, he also said that the punctuation from the King James was inspired and preserved .... "one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled" he quoted ....

Makes me want to yell out "IT ALREADY HAS BEEN FULFILLED WITH CHRIST!" (after the roar of ignorant people yelling "AMEN" or "PREACH ON!")

Wonder what would happen ....

This thread smacks of....

"God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican."

I'm sure they're not aware that "jot" and "tittle" are terms that describe Hebrew, not Elizabethan English, punctuation.  :P

Postmoderns like Miller are never certain about anything, except that you can be certain that conservatives are wrong about what they know.

IFB formula for intellectual success, when confronted with ideas that are contrary to your own:

[Convenient Label] like [person whose ideas differ from mine] is/are [predetermined flaw in Convenient Label's thinking].

You never have to engage in differing opinions OR be challenged!

I do thank God for guiding me away from such foolishness. Prideful? I hope not. I just had an experience and wanted to share it. Been awhile since I was sitting under such preaching - it hits you after learning just how crazy and foolish it really is.

I'm a postmodern, though maybe not quite like Miller. I'm certain of a lot of things. Among them are that conservatives are right about a lot of things, but wrong about others... and the same is true for liberals.

I have been checking news from all over the internet and still haven't read anything about a revival breaking out anywhere so maybe this guy should do something different. ;)

Are you denying that Miller is a postmodern, and that postmodern/relativistic thinking is greatly flawed philosophically/theologically?

I'm convinced of a young earth position, and writings like the one cited by Miller <about folk from my persuasion> are often patronizing and condescension cloaked as longings for "dialogue", all in the hopes of dumbing down or eradicating other people's beliefs.

Odd...one could argue the same thing about Answers in Genesis.

I wouldn't deny that, he probably is, although that label is very amorphous.

I would not necessarily agree. I don't find it "greatly flawed" philosophically or theologically.

FWIW, I agree with a great many conservative positions.

But here's an uncloaked longing for dialog. YEC, is an intellectually and theologically bankrupt philosophy. I'd like to dialog about how you should change your beliefs to come more in line with reality, and more importantly, Holy Scripture.
