There seems to be some discrepancy about the name of the shooter. Canadian media identifies him as Jessica van Rootselaar rather than Jesse Strang; however, as this article notes, Strang is his mother's last name. (Perhaps Van Rootselaar is an assumed name?)



Clearly not.

I'd say the media was being a bit obfuscatory as to the "gender identity" of the perpetrator.

Jesse is a gender-neutral name but it is more common for boys.

It's more about making them look better. US media has done this with killers there. Recently we saw it with that ICE "victim". But Canadian media just hit a new low with that one. This isn't Bruce "Caitlyn" Jenner. This was a killer. They wouldn't do this with Clifford Olson or Robert Picton (that would be like lipstick on a pig I guess).

Seems to be the opposite problem in the U.S. The Covenant School shooter was a female who identified as a man named Aiden Hale.

Google Aiden Hale, and up comes a picture of a woman named Audrey Hale. Same person, of course, but instead of insisting on the transgender identification, they've downplayed it.

After all, you mustn't "deadname" or "misgender" a trans person. Unless she turns out to be a spree killer. Wouldn't want to bring disrepute on the "community."
