Matt Maher

I think for me the issue is two part. A) comfort singing modern songs written by a Catholic who exists inside the Protestant arena, and B) The appeal he has to legitimatize Catholicism - attracting people to and keep people in that system of religion.

From his own website.  http://www.mattmahermusic.com/matt

?Everything Is Grace? is based on a quote by St. Therese of Lisieux out of ?Her Last Conversations? that reads, ?Everything is a grace, everything is the direct effect of our father's love - difficulties, contradictions, humiliations, all the soul's miseries, her burdens, her needs - everything, because through them, she learns humility, realizes her weakness. Everything is a grace because everything is God's gift. Whatever be the character of life or its unexpected events - to the heart that loves, all is well.?

Shallow and lacking truth, like?...

Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely You've bled for us

(Chorus)
Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven's will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer's crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim

Chorus

O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light
The glory of God has defeated the night

O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead
He's alive! He's alive!

Chorus (X2)

If you are comfortable singing a song from a practicing Catholic who is on recording saying, "I?ve really tried to be a Catholic, ministering alongside my fellow brothers and sisters from different denominations ?.  But with that being said, it?s a different kind of ecumenism." be my guest.

Hey, I'm just dealing with the "Shallow and lacking truth" issue...if you don't want to listen to his music because he is a Catholic, that's your business.  But there is no reason for you to continue to add disclaimers that don't fit.

T-Bone, I'm just asking because it's not clear to me, but are you defending Rome?

No I'm not defending Rome at all.  Though I will admit that I have met several Catholics that are quite different than what comes out of Rome.  When I ask them about their salvation, they give me a biblical response... not the response that comes from Roman Catholicism. When I ask them why they are in the Roman church, I get everything from. "to affect change", to "its where I was raised".  Now as to Rome itself, I stand against the Roman system and their theology...I have even written magazine articles and letter to the SBC boards when they erroneously wanted to team with Rome.  As to Maher's agenda, seems like he is trying to build a false ecumenism, which I would stand against...that does not make his music shallow and missing doctrine...at least in some of his songs.  Thanks for asking.

We might have some closet ECT'ers here. Timothy George {NAC fame} would be proud.

No doubt in a forum this size there would be those who see nothing wrong with Evangelicals and Catholics joining together in an ecumenical effort...I clearly see huge problems.

Bravo!

Good for you!

That kind of ecumenicism  is dangerous...it is clear that Rome has a different gospel than does the Scripture.

Matt Maher is ROME?!?!?!?! Who knew?  :o

Well, apparently Tim. But besides him?  8)

Do you watch, listen or read Bill O'Reilly or Fox News?  I think he's Catholic.

It is okay to agree with "Rome" on politics but not on music.  8)

Yes he is, and so is Hannity, and their opinion is worthless.

I really dislike O'Reilly.

In 1989, 85% of RCC voters were registered Dems.
Not sure what is now.

Never trust a Catholic in politics or religion.

Pat Buchanan is my favorite Catholic writer/pundit.

Tim... Look up the Frederick William Faber. He was a Catholic priest...

He wrote many hymns used by IFBs, including

"Faith of our Fathers"

I worked for a large Baptist organization at one time. Based on my personal experience, one of the kindest most ethical people I worked for.....was Catholic.  She was one of the reasons I was able to have insurance and help provide for my family.  Many of the other Baptist employees spent the majority of their time gossiping, backbiting and backstabbing.

You might want to check out John Michael Talbot's music, as well.

You may be right.  Atheists and Buddhists don't really interact with Baptists, while the Catholics have several centuries of hunting down and executing every Baptist they could find.  I guess we do have more in common with the Catholic.

Thankfully, the few Catholics I know are not hunting down anybody.

I've learned not to pigeon hole groups of people.  We're all broken and need a Savior.
