My first week at HAC!

I arrived at HAC as a 17 year old kid from a GARBC church.  I did not know anyone.  I was extremely nervous.  My folks drove me to HAC and stayed for a couple of days.  I remember an empty feeling when they drove out of the parking lot.  Life had changed forever!

And now look at what you've become!  (Never mind, just trying to help)

:)

My dorm room was at Baptist City.  My dad was helping me unload my luggage.  We walked into the dorm room and the floor was soaking wet.  The hot water heater had a hole in it.  Of course, no one was taking care of it.  The guy who already lived in the dorm (on his fourth Sophomore year) acted like it wasn't there.  My dad was going to rent a wet dry vac when Dave Carpenter came in and said he would take care of it.

I was coming from Tennessee Temple in Jan of 79. I knew of the hair requirements and had gotten a short hair cut. I was waiting by the information desk for my sister and Stan Harris came up to me and introduced himself and proceeded to tell me I needed a haircut. I was shocked. My hair was way  shorter than at Temple. Was assigned to Baptist City and met my first roommate and his name was Bink. I began to wonder what I had gotten in to. Then I met two other roommates Zane Abberger ( great friend to this day) and Jim Donahue. Great guys who helped get me through the first semester I was there.

Thought I knew who you are, but either incorrect, or you don't show your age. See Donahue fairly regularly, actually will be at a meeting tomorrow with him. Still a great guy.

Two of my brothers were already HAC students when I arrived as a student. They both worked 3rd shift, so after getting me assigned to a room, they both went back to their respective rooms to sleep.
I met Karen Leonard Kurtz that first day as she was standing near the info desk. We remained good friends and each was in the other'a wedding . It helped that I was assigned to same bus route Lorenz was on.

I was in Division 3 for my first three years. One of my roommates  ( Shelly Crist) was in Division 3 and invited me to join it. Of course, going through registration line back in those days included invitations to every ministry there.
I was on 34-4. Jack Turner was my bus captain. Jehu from old forum Ron (last name Pichinko or something like that), and Loren Kurtslz were also. Unika? (I think her married name is Golden) was only returning lady worker and she was my partner that one week only as she was moving ministries.  Terry Martin Shipplein  and Tommy Raines Wright were also new to that route that year.

I was in a dorm room at Baptist City with 7 other guys.  The ones I remember were Barry Durban, John and Joe Esposito, Ed Zipperor, and a guy named Everett.  It was quite the unique mix!

8?  Sounds less like a dorm "room" and more like a stockyard.

Each Baptist City dorm room had four rooms to it.  Each room had a bunk bed.  The bad thing was the one bathroom.  My Sophomore year there were 4 of us in the same area.  It was great.

On Saturday bus calling I learned the boundaries of the route by name.
North
Ashland
Fullerton and
Lake Michigan
My bus captain told me most new people would have no idea where they had been.

I have no respect for half a Hacker! :)

I had been out of high school for 6 years. English teacher Bruce Johnson taught a class on how to study & challenged us to so study & not just take our classes but study & excel.

I am indebted to Bruce.

I took the challenge.

About the only teacher that I can recall that  actually told students to read and study would have been Bill Grady. Schaap probably to a lesser degree but Schaap did encourage students to build a personal library. I don't recall any of the other ones saying anything like that. It was usually 'Get busy for God'!

I remember my parents taking me to main campus.  There were students dressed in costume along Route 30.  Signs were posted.  When we arrived on campus there was a variety of games going on.  They had a large picnic lunch for everyone.  I think it was a medieval theme.  It was pretty impressive.

You either missed or have forgotten Joe Combs' classic taped message:  How To Be a Better Student

(mp3 copy available for only $19.95!)

I think I still have that Cassette tape somewhere along with "Go to the Great Men".  You might be a Hacker if.......  :)
