Number of students at HAC

Last fall I was invited to sit in a preaches advisory committee meeting on campus. It was very informative.

They announced that the highest enrollment of Hyles Anderson College at any time was about 1700. They also said they have capacity in the on campus dorms of around 600. Some of the old dorms from the catholic era need to be torn down. The Baptist city property is used for the Christian School and the old dorms are used for a variety of purposes.
I just wanted to thank you for recent information on the school. There aren't that many people on this forum who have recent information or experience.

It seems to me that there are varying feelings on what HAC meant to those (Like me) who attended in the past. Some want the school out of business. I don't. Even though I may feel different on some issues than I did as student almost 50 years ago, I still think there are those in that ministry who love the same Jesus as me and I pray that they will allow the Spirit to control their every action and that God will be glorified in all.

Are you pleased with the training your son has received? Is he still a student?

20 years ago I would never have considered HAC for my son. The school is not accredited and that has hurt both of us.

HAC now has a church media major that carries with it certain IT certifications. For that reason he went to HAC. Like many freshmen he struggled a bit adjusting to life there. The faculty, staff, and students treated him great. The ministry leaders treated him great.

His main complaint was that teachers went too fast for him to keep up. But he had been homeschooled and hadn’t had a lot of experience sitting in lectures.

He’s made the decision to stay home and enroll in an IT program in a trade school here. It is only 20 months and state will pay for it. A HAC degree will take 3 more years and cost over $36,000.

But his experience was positive.

I'm glad you felt it was positive. That is interesting that the media majors do offer certifications that can be useful in a wide array of employment settings.

May I ask a couple more questions? I know your knowledge would be somewhat limited, but I'm trying to evaluate the present version of the school against what I experienced so many years ago.

1. What would you think the sex demographic of the school is? Is it fairly split between male and female?

2. You mentioned your son is a media major -- of the male students attending, what percentage would you think are in ministry majors? Seems to me in the "Hyles" days, he wasn't particularly interested in anything but ministry majors. Sure, there were a few music students, but that was about it -- and it was expected that their musical skills would be used in a church setting. I say again, sometimes schools must change to survive. It appears that HAC is evolving some. You mentioned some of the nutty rules gone. And I still don't know what band aid police are!

Demographics. I'll try based on what I saw. If I had to estimate 45% men to 55% ladies. One of the things about the advisory committee was that each pastor was asked to address chapel and give words of advice. When I spoke, I asked for those men who were called to preach to stand. Quite a few stood. But I cannot give you numbers. The media major is still being developed but it is a good program. They also now have a program that trains students to be EMTs. It also has state certification.

That's interesting that you believe the ladies outnumbered the men. It's been a long time, but I would put it at about 65-70% men fifty years ago.

And on the media and EMT programs, I just see that as a necessary evolution. And frankly, I'm ok with that. Thanks again for your perspective and impressions!

In the early 90's when I attended, it seemed as if there many more women than men. I never lacked for a date! Of course, sitting in chapel was considered a date! 🤪

In the late eighties, when I was attending The Masters College (now University) there was good natured rivalry been them and Biola...

Q: What's the difference between a trash can and a girl attending Biola?
A: The trash can gets taken out at least once a week.

Q: What's the difference between a mouse and a guy attending TMC?
A: The mouse has more hair on his chest.

That is funny but I also remember that sitting together at church or chapel was considered a “date.”

We didn’t appreciate as guys how cheap we were getting a date! Years later I would pay much more for about the same level of satisfaction. 😂😂😂

I actually visited the Masters College some time in either 1988 or 89. I took a Space A MAC flight from New Jersey March AFB to visit my friend in San Demas. I was so excited to see John MacArthur and the college.
We were able to make it to a Wednesday night service, and I was so disappointed that MacArthur was preaching out of town!

As I write this, I understand that Dr. MacArthur is on the threshold of Heaven. I know there was some controversy about him decades ago. I guess there is for most every minister of renown. I liked the man. I thought he was solid and during Covid he courageously refused to close the doors of the church. God bless him.

John MacArthur went to Heaven last night. This is his first day there. He finished well. Glory to God.

I just came across a page from the 1983 yearbook wherein the college claimedHAC Caber 1983 Attendance.jpg to have had 2,272 students in 1982. FWIW.

We left in August 1983 interesting
