If you were the pastor of a church, would you forbid pictures, posters, or banners to be displayed in your church that have scripture verses from a version other than the KJV? What about bulletin covers with a verse from a non-KJV version?

I ask because my sister-in-law was told that she could not pass out a coloring sheet to her first grade class at VBS last week because the picture she found had a verse not from the KJV.

Perhaps your sister-in-law should attend a different, sane place.

Absolutely not! Someone might read John 3:16 from an NIV, and the next thing you know he's serving baby soup at a Satanist black mass.

KJV-onlyism: after nearly 25 years, still the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

If they think only a KJV is the Bible you have way more problems ahead of you at that place.

Oops... You used that word Ransom. Shame on you.

The IFBs are "eat up" with KJVOism. Even those that say they are KJV preferred, do so as to not appear overly rigid in the discussion. KJV preferred usually indicates the person is really KJVO.

You realize you asked that in on an anti-KJV only forum right?

So, I agree with the Pastor from the point of consistency. If it is a KJV church, making a statement like "we believe the KJV to be the preserved word of God for...", it is only consistent to be consistent with material ie bulletins, pictures, etc. If she had passed out the pictures before I saw them, I would not have had a caniption, but I would have asked her to be more careful. I would also feel obligated to provider her with resource material, which BTW is the struggle most SS teachers have.

I will get flamed. Not gonna have a KJV discussion here, simply answered the question.

Or they might get confused at the fact that Jesus is called "God's one and only Son"....

I don't attend there myself. The church I attend is not dogmatic on what version you choose to read as much as they are that you read the version you choose.

I am a NKJV reader myself. I find I can follow along nicely since our pastor and most of our guest speakers read from the KJV.

A banner or a coloring page with a non-KJV scripture would certainly not be forbidden in our church.

Yeah... You love that word "begotten" so much that you fail to realize the "one of a kind" unique nature of the "Son". Even those "begotten" to Eternal life.... need not share in the "exclusive" nature and position of Christ our Lord.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 (NKJV)

I could easily see how a child, who just heard how he could become a son of God (John 1:12, I John 3:2), might be confused to read that Jesus is God's "one and only" Son.

Our Church uses KJV only text on everything.

But, I also know if someone used NIV it wouldn't be a major issue.

I believe everyone knows to default to KJV out of habit.

I would love for you explain the difference in the use of the word "only" in the KJV and the "one and only" in some modern translations?

The real confusion existing in the term "begotten".

Yup.  Like here, where Ishmael is erased from history if it means "one and only son":

Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son

Jn 1:12
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Yeah, never mind this:

I believe this would describe most Baptist churches today.

Sure. We are "begotten" of God just like Jesus.... What a joke.

I called my SIL and found that the coloring page contained the verse "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these" from the NIV. Apparently the VBS leaders took exception to this rendering. Or, perhaps because it is worded so much differently than the KJV. She really wasn't given an explanation other than not to use it.

Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son

Thank you. "Only begotten son" certainly does not mean "one and only son." The title "only begotten" is just that - a title of primacy or preeminence. Isaac is called Abraham's "only begotten" son because he was the heir to the promise of God. He was not Abraham's one and only son.

Jesus Christ is the "only begotten" Son of the Father.  He is certainly preeminent. He is not God's "one and only" Son - He is the "firstborn" of every creature (Col. 1:15), and the "firstborn" among many brethren (Rom. 8:29).

But, laying all that aside. I can still see how a child might be confused by the difference. Very few first-graders can handle a theological discussion of this nature.

Actually, Jesus is God's "one and only Son"...God doesn't have many sons in the same nature of Christ...we are the children of God through adoption...We are not sons of God in the same way Jesus is the Son of God.  He is God's one and only Son!
