The reason so many opt out of SS is the sad salaries that IFB pastors get. I was one for years and never made over 35k.

Good points.
Lots of variables to that number. $35k in 1990 was a decent salary in this area.

my dad almost pushed it too far as a paramedic firefighter.... .. and before that he definitely pushed it too far as a commercial salvage diver... ....it took a minor heart attack to make him stop. .... (that was when he invented that sockpuppet spoof the empty dive suit..).. ... but had that not happened he might have pushed on working as a paramedic until a major heart attack killed him.... .. he stopped doing volunteer stuff like working in the ships rigging at the same time he retired from diving too... ..he was living then by the old saying... there is always one more thing to do... i;m very glad he;s done with that... .

Yeah, I think people who are ambitious and passionate about what they do have a hard time moving onto that last phase where they give up a large portion of what they have done for the whole lifetime that has forged their identity.
