The night some dude quoted the book of Revelations and got the crowed so fired up that people were jumping out of their seats, jumping on their seats & some literally running circles around auditorium.

But the best part about that night was sitting on the first floor under the mezzanine and saw one guy get so excited that he jumped up on his pew... Then jumped off the pew shouting... But unfortunately he caught a little too much air and hit his head on the low ceiling knocking himself out cold. We laughed so hard we had to leave the auditorium.

Church with a heart is the year that sticks out the most for me, after the pickles.

I wonder how many years they did "The Church With a Heart"?

Was it really done more than once?  Was I there for more than one PS using this theme?

Yikes!

I must be losing it.

I mean, I remember what I was wearing on my one date with Ed Russ. 

I recall being at a huge building that I rode to in a van with other Bible Club workers driven by Jim Wertz.  We had to wait under some bleachers out of view and then walk across the stage holding Bible Club signs with some of our kids. 

Afterwards, Bro. Jim took us out to Shakey's. 

I've seen it twice.  Once at FBCH and once at the Civic Center.

Didn't Jack Van Impe preach that night? I was a kid and can't remember for sure, but somehow that pops in my head.

Not that night.  By then, we were in stark contrast to him.  JVI was about a decade earlier.

I believe it was Curtis Hutson.

I paid for a bus out of my own pocket and ran it that night. Only had three kids come. Baptized two of them. Was discouraged about it b/c of the money/time spent and the  very low turn out but I dealt with those kids very carefully. Look forward to seeing them in Heaven some day...

In the mid 80's the constant never-ending battle to get the front row of the balcony overhang. My Dad would drop me off at the front doors at 5.30 AM. The gathering crowd of men would huddle and plan their entrance. When security unlocked the doors we would run at top speed for our chosen pew. In five minutes the entire auditorium would be claimed.

Saw a guy run full tilt into one of the lower balcony posts one morning... 

My favorite memory of those times is one particularly desperate scramble. I flew, jumped pews, etc. and landed like a guy sliding into third base on the pew I was aiming for in the overhang. I looked up to see my petite mother primly sitting there laughing at me. Jack Patterson had let her in the back alley door by Bro. Hyles office about 30 minutes earlier... 

And believe it or not this is why the Brennans stick out in my mind. Never met your dad or mom but I just happened to sit in one of those seats in the front row just in front of the band. Everyone was looking at me funny and then a guy I know who played in the band tapped me on the shoulder and told me that I just sat in the Brennan's seats!! How was I to know??

Let me follow up with a story about the amphitheater night in 1993. I had just gotten married a few weeks before that Pastors' School and was done with college. The last year in college the wife and I had been in John Francis' division. I had transitioned from college student to a married church member. I still worked at the job I had while I was in college and had taken off that Thursday to go with my wife to the amphitheater. A freshman who worked in the office with me was also in John Francis' division. Friday night after the amphitheater meeting as I came in to work I noticed this guy walking along the highway down the sidewalk, into the office. As we sat down to work you couldn't help but tell something was wrong. This guy's clothes were wrinkled and he smelled of bad body odor. I asked what was wrong. He said he hadn't been home since Thursday morning. Francis had put him on one of those rental busses to pick up people.  His bus picked up a load of people from Cabrini Green. He was the only white guy on the bus. He said when the driver dropped him off at where they were supposed to meet that his division brethren had left him stranded.  A Chicago cop had been nice to him. He had hitchhiked back to Indiana and had gotten close to our office in time for work. Felt sorry for him.

I think you guys are referring to a different time. The one I remember was when I was a kid (guessing around '75 or '76) and the conference was held somewhere in Chicago. I remember it being a change-of-pace from the usual Civic Center (maybe it was unavailable that night).

I don't know, it is all foggy for me now.

This would have been right around the time the auditorium was being doubled in size. I believe there was a circus scheduled for that weekend and we had to vacate.

This is from 1930 and gives you an idea what the interior looked like in its early years.

One of Bro. Hyles favorites, he loved to tell the story about witnessing to Elvis, only reason Bro. Hyles didn't win him to the LORD, Evis was already saved, as a young person. Elvis was at Chicago Stadium many times in the 70s.
This video gives you an idea what the audio sounded like in a concert as opposed to a Bulls game.
Word has it that one of the reasons we went there was because of how good Elvis sounded in concert.

More often than you know.  As a teenager, we were left stranded with some frequency in various part of Chicago on teen soul winning.

He passed away on April 11th. He had preached his last sermon in his own pulpit on the resurrection on Easter Sunday 1980.
