Tell us about your personal meetings with Dr. Hyles.  It may have been while you were growing up at FBCH.  Maybe it was while you were a student at HAC.  Possibly it was after you graduated.

*As always, one meeting per post.  It's all about the numbers!!

I met him the first time I heard him speak which was at Central Baptist Church in Pomona, CA in 1977.  Actually, that was the only time I ever spoke to him.

...the first time I got the courage up to get in his line after church on Sunday night. I stepped briefly into his office and said, "My name is Tom Brennan."

He said, "I know who you are."

...at which point I froze. He knows me?  :o

I was able to drive Dr. Hyles several times to the hotel after the services.
Nothing interesting to talk about.

When my family left I remember him meeting with us telling my dad, I told you what I think you should do, then praying with us, and we left.

I never had a single  meeting with him while I was a student.

I drove other female students there several times because  I knew how to get to the church. I'don't wait while they had their meetings, then I'd drive the two of us back to campus.

I stood in line forever one evening after church to ask him to sign a Bible that I had purchased for a fellow I was in love with.

I explained that it was a Christmas gift and how I had been mailing it to some of the fellow's top ten influences in his life to sign.  He thumbed through it, scanned over some of the pages with writing on them, and looked up over his glasses at me and said, "So you had an extra page and thought you'd ask me, huh?"  I was mortified.  I started stuttering and explaining I was trying to get the ones from far away done first.  Yada yada yada.  He asked me who my home pastor was and I almost lied because I was so embarrassed.  :)

He then laughed and told me to come pick up the Bible the next week.

a fellow student "insisted" he take me to meet him my first Sunday as a new student.  (me thinks he was trying to score points). it was really overrated, waited in line for 30 minutes for a handshake. needless to say I never again stood in line :D. He did visit my home church a couple of years later to pray with my wife and I over some health issues. I will never forget that meeting and prayer. It was very personable, and there was something about his prayer that made you feel as though everything was going to be ok as soon as he said "amen." Weird I guess how a 10 minute meeting can be stuck in the files of your memories.

I don't believe I ever thanked you for that Bible.

After I was already pastoring but still single Bro. Hyles was preaching in a town close to where Mandy lived. I could not go b/c I had to work. I asked her to go and introduce herself her to him and tell him that she was marrying me. Surprisingly, she agreed. She walked up to him, shook his hand, introduced herself, and explained that she was my fiance. He looked at her and said, "Couldn't you do any better?"

:D

He was quit witted and had a great sense of humor.

You should have thanked her sooner as you were in such awe to see MacArthur's (JRR's horse) signature on the inside cover!

And quite a good judge of character! :P

My husband would take our Doberman to work with him as he guarded Bro Hyles home. One morning he came out and Bro Hyles  car wouldn't start so he hopped into the front seat of the security car and Duke our Doberman laid his head on Bro Hyles shoulder...he(the dog) loved people. Bro Hyles offered him a beef jerky...LOL!!

During my 4 years at HAC I never had a meeting with Dr. Hyles.  I was called up on the platform to help him with an illustration on a Wednesday evening.  Does that count?  :)

No.

I did pull a 3 x 5 out of my pocket and asked him a question as I was leaving the platform.  :)
