I read it about 30 years ago, but it went something like this.
John, an unsaved Anglican, dreads and fears God but is forced to love Him. On his walk to the heavenly isle, he encounters another traveler, named "Virtue." Virtue is as sincere and honest as a man can get. He condemns all man-made rules and strongly demands that we follow God's rules.
Virtue tells John that he must walk a certain distance every day. Surprised, John asks if that is one of God's rules. Virtue replies, No, I made it up myself.
I was shaken by the fact that I was doing the same thing.
