Places that I remember in the HAC/FBCH area

The Rally's on Calumet Ave right near the church. Back in the day you could get an entire meal for $2.50. And I did. About a thousand times. My Bible club was Hammond and I think I lived at that Rally's... Still get a hankering for those fries.  :D

That one is closed and boarded up due to the large number of employees that seemed to get themselves murdered in the building.

As a freshman I remember going to the laundromat in Schererville.  I can't remember the name.  I do remember walking down the street with a bag full of dirty laundry.  :)

Ying Ling's

There was a large Holiday Inn in Merrillville.  I believe the building attached was called the Holiday Inn Star Theater??  They would have big time names in for concerts.  I'm guessing it is still there.

How about Miner Dunn!!  Great place to eat.  Always gave you a little cup of Orange sherbet for dessert.  I believe it is still open.

Miner Dunn is still open in Highland, they closed all the other locations.

My husband and I had a HUGE fight on a college date at this place (before we were married)!  Ha!  Then after we were married, we got into a very bad wreck right in front of Shakey's.  We were stopped behind someone turning left (before there was the middle turning lane) and we got rear-ended by a guy who was going 55 mph when he hit us.  It's a miracle we weren't killed.  I was pregnant with my oldest at the time.  The driver and passenger got out of their vehicles and ran.  The driver ran to Sauzer's and called the police and reported his vehicle stolen.  hahaha!

Different name still there.

Just down from the Blue Top restaurant was a war memorial with flags.  It was on the right at the corner of Indianapolis and Ridge Rd, I think.

There is an ancient HAC proverb - "Any argument at ye ol Shakeys is fault of girlfriend or wife and sometimes both".

Yes, that was there when I was a freshman.

Remember Dan Wolfe's house on the corner in Schererville?  The town bought it from him, tore it down, and built a new city hall/police station.  When Dan lived there, he would sell Christmas trees in his front lawn at Christmastime.  Anybody ever buy one from him?

Remember when there were a bunch of storefronts on Rt. 30 in Dyer before they widened the road?  They were really close to the road.  They all got torn down at some point.  There was also a house there and they moved the house back off the road.  It's still there as far as I know.

The Wolfe! was a year or two behind me at HAC.  he lived in the dorms at the time.  He now works with Ed Russ and Faith Music Missions.  I think he works with their radio station.

At one time Hammond Baptist High School had a football team.  They played on a public school football field off Rt. 30 in Dyer.  Fall of 1980 the college took us there to watch a game.  Opening snap the HB running back got the ball and ran it all the way to the other end for a touchdown.  When the player took off his helmet, it was Bro. Hyles!

There was/is a large old church in Schererville not to far from BC.  It had a basketball goal in the parking lot.  We use to walk up there and hit the hoop!

That was a classic moment.  Remember how he dodged the other team and avoided tackles.  The place went nuts when he took off his helmet.

Dairy Belle!!!!!!!!!!!  On Indianapolis, Hammond.  Smellin' please post a picture! We stopped there many a time after church with our kids!  Memories....

Strack & Van Til used to be on the northwest corner of Rt. 30 and Indianapolis. There was a Walgreens pharmacy next to it.  As a newlywed, we did our grocery shopping at that Strack & Van Til.  Walgreens moved out and then Strack & Van Til built a new store across the street on the northEAST corner adjacent to Walmart. The old building is used for several other stores now.

Strack didn't build that new building. A grocery store named Omni was in there for a while in the 90's. When they left Strack moved across the street into it.

...cashed my first ever work paycheck at that old Strack. Good times.
