The Hammond Woolworth's.  Spend some time in there during teen soulwinning when we were supposed to walk the streets of Hammond.

RIVER OAKS! YAY!

There was one car that normally went to River Oaks to goof off, er, witness.  I didn't rank high enough to get to ride with people.  I always envied those that did.  They seemed to develop a relationship with their driver.  I was one of those who was told that no adult wanted me, so I could just wander around Hammond until the bus left for Schererville again.

ain't denyin' !

Usually, there was enough time to walk to McDonalds, get something to eat and then walk back.  During the winter it was a different story.  We just found some open door in the church and wandered around or slept until time to go.  I mean, seriously?  We were supposed to just walk around Hammond for 3 hours in a Chicago winter!?!

I'm with you in a HAC kinda way.  We would be dropped in Chicago in the middle of winter to visit a bus route for 10 hours.  Needless to say I did my calling (morning and afternoon run).  In between this I found a street with businesses and looked for a warm place to spend some time.  I remember a Burger King, a old library, and several store front businesses.

Ah, yes.  The Hammond library.  Also a safe-haven for us non-desirables.  We would eventually ditch it altogether and go study something at the library.  I enjoyed research, but not being ignored by the "In" group.

I am definitely pro-bus ministry.  That is the way my family and I were reached.  The aggravating part of the HAC/FBCH bus ministry was how the same results could have been achieved in 1/3 of the time.

All of a sudden I hear Charlie Brown adult people voices and "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

This was the word on the street.  I have no idea what the official adjudication of it was.  I just know that we weren't able to prosecute VH, who is rumored to be behind the Encinas murder.
It was probably only supposed to be a robbery, but maybe RE recognized the "robber".
Either way, when VH pulled out a few years later, with a building already being built, etc., it kinda validated what the street said about the whole situation.
I'm sure VH is prolly a blackmail victim by now...

If you had not heard, he passed away in the last couple of weeks. Car accident.

Thank-You Tom, I had not heard this. I used to work with VH for a little while in college.

No, I hadn't heard.

I wonder if the whole story will ever come out.

Yes, the Lincoln Hotel was the $5 a night flea-bag joint across from Muellers hardware store, 3 blocks west of the old auditorium on Sibley.

Once a child pervert tried to invite me to his room, @ the Lincoln.
He saw me playing by the railroad tracks, and told me he was railroad security.  He had keys to the switch-control boxes.
Anyway, I told my Dad, and he went with me.  Imagine this scumbag squirming as my dad plainly asked him if he died right then, did he know for sure he would go to Hell.

Needless to say, I learned a lesson about those who say that they are in authority, by deny the spirit of the law.
So I feel a little queasy whenever I remember that place.

Twelve Islands restaurant, downtown Crown Point. Best lemon rice soup.

Valentino's, located in the Crown Point court house basement. Would go to the little shops there with my mom quite a bit.

Johnny's Round the Clock. My older sister came to live with us for a while (she was dating a semi-pro baseball player from Joliet) she got a job there. Her boyfriend took me on a "date" there and she waited on us. Fun times.

This IS a great thread. I'm actually reminded of some good times during my six year sentence in NWI.

And who could forget that hotbed of activity called Liberty Square!!

They should've backed off on that a little.
;)

They had a kitchen fire, and had to remodel last year.
I'm looking forward to that Lemon Rice soup, and baklava next month.
