Saw this on FB. Its from someone who is a member of a gay affirming UCC church.
Today, on Good Friday, a day that the Christian world weeps, I am steeled and in reverence, not so much because of the atonement thing but because of the courage in standing up to the power structure of the time. We often think of Jesus in terms of a model for loving and forgiveness, but let us not forget that He was also a model for speaking truth to power. If we are to follow in His path we also are to cultivate courage, to devote ourselves to a cause greater than ourselves. Yes, sometimes tables must be overturned. I have trouble referring to Him as Lord, as He told me I am his equal and his brother. I call Him Master in the tradition of all great wisdom teachers, and today, I also call him Hero.
