Proliferation of gambling.

I don't see where gambling is called out by the scriptures as sin as are many other activities.

I personally think it's really stupid. Think about it... If a casino is open for business the vast majority of gamblers are going to lose. They have to. How else would a casino stay open?
If you win a gambling, which is motivated by greed, perhaps you could build a bigger barn to store everything in.

In my experience, sometimes these obscure elective classes teach students more than non-elective classes. I think I’ve mentioned before on the forum that I learned more US history from an elective Mormon History class than I ever did from my actual required U.S. history classes in college. I recall the professor being a bit of a nut, but I sure did learn.

It bemuses me to hear the sports media downplaying the gambling arrests and then plugging their sponsor Fan Duel Sports Book!

I think if you consider Biblical stewardship principles a case could be made that it’s a sin.

I believe, for me, it would be a sin.

ESPN Bets has 5 years as the over-under for Chauncey Billups‘ jail time! 🙂

“Nobody but gamblers could have cast the dice, all blood bespattered, at the foot of the cross of our Redeemer. Gambling brings men into a state of heart worse than almost any other form of sin. When a man is willing to risk his all practically on the mere toss of a halfpenny whether goods shall go up or down, he is usually a bad man, and if he is not he will be so before long; for that kind of thing does serious mischief to the tenderest tissues of the heart.” Charles Spurgeon

A simple search on YouTube will show any honest man the broken lives and destruction gambling has brought to multitudes of people. Here is a professional gambler who explains how easy it is to take money from suckers involved in that activity which overall is controlled by various Mafias. He even tells how they handle “suicide calls.”

I’ve known a few people who do very low stakes gambling for fun. It might be something as simple as pitching pennies, buying an occasional scratch off ticket or a silly Super Bowl bet on who’s paying the pizza delivery tip. I don’t consider those activities to be a sin.

On the other hand, I have a friend who basically lost everything due to a gambling addiction—twice, actually. He literally couldn’t play a round of golf with me and friends without letting something “ride” on a hole or whatever. After a couple of years, I learned that I had to tell him that our bets couldn’t be more than a quarter on whatever he wanted to bet on. Worst case scenario, someone might end up owing $5 by the end of a round. If I left it up to him, he might end up paying me $100 or more (I was a better golfer).
