"Whosoever" sounds more impressive, and because it's a "Bible word" (instead of an ordinary, modern-English word), the intellectually dishonest can sneak in all sorts of connotations about human autonomy and free will.

On the other hand, "Those who believe shall have eternal life" clearly says nothing, one way or the other, about any given person's ability or inclination to believe. (Which is why as Calvinists we believe the rest of the Bible, and don't allow the "whosoevers" to trump it.

Well, as I understand it, not that I believe it, it is the way a Calvinist defines the depravity of man. Orthodox theology says man is depraved, it is described as total depravity. We are all depraved, to the extent that we are all capable of depraved acts.

Calvinism takes this a step further. Calvinism states that mans depravity extends so far that he is unable, he has an inability of the will to even respond to God. As a result, God must save him without his will, as he has no will to respond. The doctrine of Total Depravity becomes practically the doctrine of Total Inability

Calvinism takes this a step further. Calvinism states that mans depravity extends so far that he is unable, he has an inability of the will to even respond to God. As a result, God must save him without his will, as he has no will to respond. The doctrine of Total Depravity becomes practically the doctrine of Total Inability

Calvinism ignores the work of the Gospel. The Gospel is the bridge between the heavenly and the earthly. No one believes the natural man can understand the spiritual aspects of the sacrifice of God. BUT... .any man can respond to the message of the Gospel. The plain simple truth that a person DIED for them. A man took their guilt and punishment for them. This is isn't rock science.... nor is it beyond any person to embrace. Christ didn't die in a spiritual "test tube" where only the elect can see and respond. He died openly.... among all of humanity.
