If abstaining from the appearance of evil is to be translated as most fundies translate it, then we can all just pour our beer into a red solo cup, feel really spiritual that we avoided the "appearance" of evil & call it a day.

If abstaining from the appearance of evil is to be translated the way most "Commercial Christianity Pushers" translate it, then we can call adultery a mistake, feel really spiritual that we have handled the "appearance" of evil and call it our life.

Tell me about it. But it really seems to drive those "Commercial Christianity Pushers", that change from Church of Christ to BibleBelievingSatanHatingHylesSupportingBaptist to emergent lite or whatever is selling at the moment, out of the business of fleecing the flock once they are exposed as enablers of porn-pushing, adulterous baby killers (that is what abortion is, right?).

Hey, but no worries, since they always seem to find another flock to fleece where it is no problem to live in adultery and push their Commercial Christianity. Having a form of Godliness but denying the power thereof, that's their way of doing it.

Yeah, that just keeps happening over there in Pinellas County waaaaaay too often, doesn't it?

Just pointing out that Paul was writing to Timothy and detailing the things he would experience. Not the things you would experience. Much in the same manner that Paul wrote to the Colossians and warned them of a "Gnostic type philosophy" that was among them at that time.

If you're going to play such a card, you should be consistent with it. If you're to use such a method in a self serving manner..... then I'm going to say you're being hypocritical.

I have absolutely no idea. I don't live in Pinellas County and I don't know of a single church that fits that weird and bad interpretation of scripture that you referenced.

It might be ancient history but you know what he's referencing!  ;)
Now, it seems ironic to me that you show disdain for 'commercial Christianity pushers' when, IMO, it's the hip relevant, contemporary group that is into a give 'em what they want marketing philosophy.

I've attended a number of churches (all SBC) that believe the verse means that we shouldn't do anything that others might misinterpret as being evil, even if we know it's not evil.

IIRC (and I might be wrong on this one, it was a long time ago), I visited a charismatic church that had the same interpretation.

TH, I have absolutely no idea who or what he's referring to.

Sure you don't. Move along folks. There's nothing to see here. Go watch the side shows and ride the Ferris (is that spelled right?) wheel, now located in Pasco County.

While we don't allow others to dictate our lifestyle or actions, there are Biblical passages that tell us there is a time and place to consider what others might think about our actions. Rom.14 and 1 Cor.8 are the obvious passages that come to mind. Paul also warned the Corinthians to consider how the lost might respond to practices in their public services.
