this is our hottest part of the year .... .... september through october and sometimes into november.... ....
the reason is the seasonal wind change.. . tradewinds from the north east - that keep hawaii cool and comfortable for most of the year stop - and south to south east winds.... what we call kona winds... begin... ..
and that brings the hot equatorial air to us .... and in some cases.... such as today when the volcano is erupting.... it brings us vog.... or ..volcanic smog... an acrid haze full of sulfer dioxide and other contaminants blown up with the lava several hundred miles away... which can choke you up... make your eyes burn.... and cause full medical emergencies for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.....
but thankfully today the haze is barely visible .... but the volcano is putting up smoke like a coal burning locomotive right now... and it would only take a small shift in wind direction.... maybe only a point or two on the compass... to bring it all right to us......
makes you want to drop everything and schedule a trip to hawaii doesn;t it?.... ..
