Time for A Positive Southern Baptist Message

From the proposed resolution by the SBC....

“Resolved, that Southern Baptists recognize that no governing institution has the authority to negate or usurp God’s definition of marriage; and be it further resolved no matter how the Supreme Court rules, the Southern Baptist Convention reaffirms its unwavering commitment to its doctrinal and public beliefs concerning marriage,”

I can't resist. I have to say it....Disclaimer... I don't really believe this. Just being playful...

That's like putting "lipstick on a pig".....

Thanks Steve,  I mean Bibleburner, I mean....  LOL  :P

The SBC is a voluntary gathering of autonomous churches. As a result, no one can claim speak for all Southern Baptists–not even the president of the denomination. That’s why it’s a little odd when people ask questions like Fox News’ Todd Starnes did: “So what would it look like if 16 million Southern Baptists engaged in civil disobedience?” There is literally nothing–not even opposing gay marriage–that would unify the behaviors of every single Southern Baptist pastor and church attender. They’ve been called “the Battling Baptists” for a reason.

SBC resolutions are “non-binding,” which means they generally express the opinion of those who attended the particular gathering where they were passed. Most people who attend Southern Baptist churches are blissfully unaware of which resolutions are passed and what they assert. While the majority of Southern Baptist church members presumably oppose gay marriage, its difficult to say how many would agree with every line of this resolution or whether it will actually affect the way churches and pastors think or behave.

Partially true...there are somethings about gay marriage that are clearly binding.  Just ask the churches that have been removed from fellowship in the SBC because of their insistence to promote gay marriage.  And while not legally binding, its is a little disingenuious  to state that the annual convention does not reflect the stand of most of the cooperating churches of the SBC.  If it did not, you would hear about it in a big way.

The most binding associations are voluntary. Once contractural Law enters, sin nature is awakened to find away around the contract and what was a pleasure to be bound to, slowly becomes an onerous taskmaster to be overthrown.

It's the "do not step on the grass" effect.

Read about it in Romans.

Yeah, right. So when I signed my marriage license, it awoke in me a desire to cheat on my bride. Huh?

*snort*

Does this mean that the Alabama church that was just disfellowshipped for affirming same-sex mirage can ignore its disfellowshipping because it's "non-binding"? I doubt it.

Dunno. I'm not Southern Baptist and never have been. Just bringing another commentary to the table.  :)

I support the stance of the SBC. Wonder though how this would apply to churches that are affiliated with both the SBC and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, which seems to lean leftward. I know of a church that gives members the option of giving to one or the other through offerings.
