While I did not know him so well back in the late 70s and early 80s, I liked him a lot. I thought he was much more authentic than most there.
I actually exchanged a few text messages with him last month on his 79th birthday. He was always kind and encouraging.
I tuned into the livestream of his funeral service yesterday. His family and friends spoke much of the various stops in ministry he had made over the past 55 years. Frankly, I thought everyone who spoke did an awkward dance around the HAC years. Many influencers that he had over the years were mentioned, Jerry Falwell being most prominent. The name "Hyles" was not mentioned. It made me wonder.
He did tell me personally some time back how that Jack Hyles paid the down payment on their home in Hammond and how he never told anyone. Toby said, "he did that for a lot of people."
