Now the first part of this verse is helpful for proclaiming God's curse on those who give others strong drink or wine. True cherry pick.
Hab 2:15 "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him,"
They tend to stop before the real meaning of the passage is revealed. Now here is the part IFBs overlook.
"and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness," as Ham did on his father's nakedness when in such circumstances.
Now the curse is not because of giving someone wine or strong drink, rather it is the purpose that the drink is given that draws the curse.
Yep, that's right, we have what we call in modern times, date rape. The drink deprives one of his reason and the basic instincts take over. It is the immorality that brings the curse, not drinking.
Next let's look at Lot and his two daughters.
Here you have in detail what is in view in Hab 2:15.
Incest, Lot and his two daughters.
Gen 19:31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
Gen 19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Gen 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
Gen 19:34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Gen 19:35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
Gen 19:37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
Gen 19:38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
Now it was not the drinking of the wine that was wrong, it was getting daddy drunk so they could have sex with him, that was the real problem and the thing that draws the curse of God.
Come to think of it I have never heard a sermon on the Lot and his two daughters story. Sure is X-rated.
People would really talk if this was your text.
Just imagine Bro. Colsten reading this in public.
