When I was growing up, I knew Dolly Parton from 9 to 5 and as a running gag about her chest. It wasn't until I got into bluegrass around 2000 that I realized how very talented she was.
I don't think too many artists could have taken a Collective Soul song and made it into a nugrass hit.
Well, it helped that Country music star from the 50s and 60s Bobby Helms (Special Angel, Fraulein, and Jingle Bell Rock fame) was my second cousin, my grandma and her siblings used to play with and sing with Hoagy Carmichael as he was raised in southern Indiana, and that my baby brother is a singer/songwriter and entertainer of the year for 3 years in the Cincinnati area. My grandfather used to work and sing in the CCC camps of the 40s! It's EASY to meet and know famous people. My wife and I used to be in Foster parent classes back in the 90s, and Steve Earle and his ex-wife LuAnne were in our classes. He's a nice guy. He needs the Lord.

That was weird, as usual, liked the original better. The only exception I can think of for that preference might be Disturbed’s cover of The Sound of Silence.

I agree, but when I heard Little Sparrow for the first time, I was surprised how well it worked as a bluegrass tune. Dolly stuck a little too closely to the original's structure. But it's still one of the rare cross-genre covers that works really well--it's no "Hurt," but it's darn close.

I work with a dude who reminds me a lot of you and your (eclectic musical) interests. He showed me a couple videos several months back of stuff like nugrass, though it was some other similar genre. Mind blowing covers of stuff that was sort of hillbilly-ish. I’ll try to remember what exactly it was and where to find it, but in the meantime….
