It's more using wisdom and discretion than fear.

That would be difficult unless he himself were faultless in his teachings. I wouldn't make any direct reference to Hyles but would speak to the Schaap issue as it is so fresh. Has that ever happened since Schaap left? Then I would, on occasion, make it clear that my policy of dealing with sexual offensives would be swift and not tolerated. Openness is key and it will take years for trust to be established.
Lastly, old staff that turned a blind eye to the past evils must be replaced.
Old staff?
How is it that the staff is more responsible than the laymen?

We are trying to determine the "right thing". You have a pastor who was uninvolved with anything that took place previously. He is in a unique situation and needs much wisdom to do the "right thing". The right thing may be to blow it all up, or the right thing might be to move forward from where you are.

YOU said it seemed like the right thing BUT you might open yourself to lawsuits. Based on your own words, you fear doing the right thing.

That is correct. With a quick thought some of the suggestions in this thread seem like the right thing. When you begin to think it through it brings up questions as to the right thing.

Uh....because staff is paid to be under-shepherds and watchers/protectors of those paying them and they failed miserably?

I get what u r saying but I believe the members hold more responsibility than the staff.
Members IMO DO have as much if not more power than the staff. After all it's the members that vote on the new pastor, not staff ONLY.

I disagree. To respect someone personally does not mean a carte blanche endorsement of their teaching and/or lifestyle. I have great respect for Billy Graham but there is much with which I would disagree.
To state that he has respect for the two previous pastors would be more of a declaration to the congregation that he is not a vengeful, hateful pastor.
