John... yes.  But which?

John the apostle?

John the elder?

An unknown John, an early Christian prophet who ministered in Asia Minor?

Pseudo-John the Baptist?

Who knows. I don't think anyone knows.

It is up to those who demand acceptance to identify the source of the writing. I do know a few things....

1.  I do know that many well known and respected men through history have questioned who authored Revelation.

2. I do know that Paul spoke of being caught up into the third heaven. He goes on to clearly say that he saw things that were unlawful for a man to utter or to speak of......

I would like to know just WHY I should believe that Paul couldn't lawfully talk of the things he say and some how the writer of Revelation takes the grand tour and goes into great detail to tell about what he "saw".

3. I do know that Revelation was a late writing. We have the evidence that no other epistle or surviving writings speak of its words.

According to Elaine Pagels in her book "Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, and Politics in the Book of Revelation," the writer of Revelation may have been called John – the book is sometimes called “Book of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine” but he was not the disciple who accompanied Jesus. He was a devout Jew and mystic exiled on the island of Patmos, off the coast of  present-day Greece.  He was likely a refugee whose home in Jerusalem had been leveled by the Romans in response to a Jewish rebellion against the Roman Empire.

“He would have been a very simple man in his clothes and dress,” Pagels says. “He may have gone from church to church preaching his message. He seems more like a traveling preacher or a prophet.”

"Most people think John was writing at about the year 90 in the first century. That would be 60 years after the death of Jesus, and the eruption of Vesuvius happened in the year 79," she says. "Much of what we find in the Book of Revelation couched in the fantastic imagery are descriptions of events that for John were very close — the war in Jerusalem, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Roman Emperors who were ruling at the time. ... Pagels is a loon.  That book was rubbish.  She has spent so much time researching gnostic writings, she sees it everywhere she goes.
