Would you pastors object to being called "brother" instead?

It's funny how you guys are trying to make it out like YOUR church assembly refers to the "pastor" as "brother" instead.  Wow, you guys have the most unique assemblies!!

Google "church signs", "baptist church signs", or "church pastor signs" and look at the pictures.  Wherever you see a reference, it's always pastor, pastor, pastor.  It's "our pastor", "the pastor", or "pastor so-and-so".  Naturally, you see fewer references to "pastor" if you simply google "church signs", but wherever you DO see a reference, it's always "pastor".

Google "baptist church bulletins".  Pastor, pastor, pastor, pastor, pastor.

Google "church brother signs" and look at the pictures.  Not a single "our brother", etc., in reference to the "pastor".

Why change the culture? It is a non-starter, biblically.

Quite the contrary, in the OP, Jesus proclaims that it is a REAL starter.

So just answer the question.  Yeah, you call each other by names, blah, blah, blah.  That's easy to say.  So given the empirical evidence I noted in the google searches --

Does your church sign or bulletin refer to the pastor as "pastor" or as "brother"?  If it refers to the pastor as "pastor", would you object to changing it to "brother" from now on?

Because mater doesn't like it.
And he must really be upset with Paul using the term 'man of God' twice in the Pastoral Epistles of one and two Timothy.*

Except for all those people who live outside the "south" doing it..... :)

Blacks are known to call each other "brother."

It is all a cultural thing. It is not a biblical thing. If I lived in Jerusalem, then it would be a different thing.

Its is a Biblical thing. Do you really need to list the verses?

You mean like Church of the Living Room
                    Brother Mater

That would make perfect sense to....no one!  :)

Is he really saying that "man of God" is some type of special "title" in the NT?

I've got some news for him. He's dead wrong. Not even close. The phrase "man of God" isn't a reference to Timothy as a pastor. Its a reference to Him being in Christ. His position in Christ. A position we all have.

So, it really is not just a matter of "acceptance"? You want to force this by saying the Bible has verses that we should call our pastors "brother?"

I am going to call him "Elder." I don't want to call him "brother."

For this reason I was against the elder-system. I never wanted to be called Elder Barry. ;)

A "pastor" shouldn't be offended in being called "brother". If you don't like it.... then don't be a "pastor".

Sure you agree with what part of this? You have a special title or you're just part of many gifted in Christ?

Exactly.  It's a demotion to equal standing with the rest of the body of Christ (which is what Jesus was demanding).

Which is why I don't believe even for a second that any "pastor" would be okay with having all references changed to "brother".  I personally believe anyone who says they'd be okay with it is lying to us and probably to themselves.

I vote for putting no one's name on the church sign or at the top of the bulletin unless it is Jesus.

Now I'll be signing Bibles in the corner...

Nope. If your point is that it must be about being biblical... then you must call the leader of your your congregation "elder." Want the verses?

This is just a silly thread... our pastor does not care what he is called. It is a hasty generalization to say that pastors demand that they have a title. Granted... among the IFBXrs, titles like "doctor" and "pastor" are abused. That accounts for .05% of Christendom? Maybe.

But the point of the OP was to illustrate how ALL Pastors are self appointed demigods.
In my experience, very few Pastors demanded to be addressed as such...even Dr Falwell insisted on being 'Jerry' to everyone from his family to the custodial staff.

To list our Pastors on the church bulletin is simply using a descriptive term.
To offer only a list of names all beginning with brother would be confusing.

No matter what we would say, BROTHER Mater wouldn't stop riding his pony that only knows one trick.

Wrong.  You call him brother.  Elder is his role, not his title.

There are lots of verses referring to elder, as in "appoint elders in every town".  But that's a "job", not a title.  I don't call my plumber "plumber Bob" just because he plays the role (has the job) of a plumber.

You want the verses for NOT calling him elder and NOT calling him pastor?  Here you go:

But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
