I have heard speakers shout that you are not right with God if you don't, and then they come up with their cute little man made opinion.

What does the term right with God mean according to the Bible, not according to Dr. Big Bottom?

Well perhaps it is only used by IFBs to induce a guilt trip in the congregants and pump up the invitation stats. Thinking, look at how God is blessing my preaching.

You are not right with God when you are dissing his saints because they wear different clothes than you, wear their hair different than you, like different music than you, read a different Bible translation than you... etc., etc.

If you don't tithe

If you don't attend church services everything the church doors are opened.

I'll give you an answer as soon as I hear it.  I've been a member of 8 IFB churches over a span of 38 years and have not heard a pastor, missionary or evangelist say, "You're not right with God if….."  But as soon as one does I will immediately post about it here.

I am with the OP on this one.  Although, to help out JrChurch, it is essentially the same as "........then your'e not right with God!"

You can put anything you want in the blank.  It is simply a tool of manipulation.  Now we could go off on a long series of posts telling each other how I believe you are not right with God.  ;)

That's why we------> "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.......That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men".

If one is manipulated it's on him........................unless one is a Cal, then it's on__________  :) Fill that blank in  :) :)

True.  Somewhat.  For those of us who grew up in that system from the time we were a baby.......it is all we knew.

I just watched a youtube someone posted from when I was in HAC.  A fellow was honoring his wife for all the college to see how much he loved her.  I called my wife in to see it - then apologized for acting the same way for so long.  It really was all we knew.

I wasn't trying to be mean. I understood your point. I suppose there were one or two things  :) I had to unlearn myself. But again just one or two  :)

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men[e] because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[f] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[g] leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5)

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling[c] the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.  (2 Corinthians 5:16-21)

It means you have the imputed righteousness of Christ freely given to you through faith in the work of Christ Alone on the cross.

Btw, the above is not something I ever heard any pastor say. It is my own sincere, honest opinion, and not a means of manipulation. It doesn't cause me to doubt the salvation of those who run afoul of it... but it does make me think they need remedial instruction in what this whole Christian thing, this Way that Jesus taught, is all about.

Bingo! Amen and Amen. That's what I was looking for.

IMHO, being right with God was always about being saved and on your way to heaven.

It should never have been applied to Christian living, soul-winning, tithing, separation from worldly Christians, etc.

Although Dr. Big Bottom and Dr. Mess-em-up got big numbers at invitation time, they were doing a disservice and violence to the Word of God and the message of Salvation. It was Grace plus works. Just like the Catholics have taught for centuries.

I am one who is still recovering from this lie.
