Suicide by gunshot is 90% effective and accounts for over half of all successful suicides.

Suicidal thoughts are often short-lived: if a potential suicide is deprived of a quick way of killing himself (e.g. putting up a barrier on a bridge), or talked out of it, he might not try again. So it stands to reason that if you make it difficult for a person to obtain the most common and most effective means of killing himself, it might deter a significant number of potential suicides from ever happening.

Of course someone truly determined to die will find another way, and no one is arguing otherwise.

there is a much more common method of suicide in hawaii... which is actually 100% effective.... and one which very few people ever hear about.... . (unless you are a first responder or eye witness).......... and that is jumping from a tall building.... .....hawaii has high rise buildings and hotels all over the place... ....i actually live in a high rise myself..... .and almost all of them have open lanai areas - (balconys).. on high floors..... and even if you don;t live in one it;s not that hard to sneak up to a high floor and then just wait until a maid or other cleaning person opens the room... it has been done that way many times..... but it;s not mentioned here in the news due to fear it might negatively affect tourism...(though the reason they give is preventing copycats)....

the really ironic thing about that is while i am prohibited from owning - using - having access to.. or even touching firearms due to a suicide attempt i made as teenager..... (that;s the reasoning they still use to this day)..... i am not prohibited from living on a high floor with open access to a balcony or open windows....... ...(but don;t worry... i am in no danger of going over the edge).... .. so to me the whole idea of removing gun access as a means of preventing suicide is laughable....... ...it;s just another step and building block in the democrats efforts to ban - confiscate - outlaw.. or otherwise destroy the rights of americans to keep and bear arms.....

which brings me to another point..... the liberals like to say that when the second amendment was written muzzle loading flintlocks were the only guns available... and therefor that type should be the only kind the 2nd ammendment pertains to..... . why do conservatives not follow up with that by reminding democrats that the 2nd ammendment only says "arms"... it does not specify "firearms".... and at the time it was written swords... axes.. dirks .. and all manner of knives - even billy clubs, were carried as "arms" in addition to guns ... and by both the military and general populace?.... people defended themselves with whatever weapon they could afford.... ..... but do you know of any state in the union.. even red states?.. where swords and any manner of sharpened blade can be lawfully carried around?.....

unfortunately i learned how to recognize the signs outside a building and on a sidewalk where someone jumped or fell to their death.... .. i say unfortunately because it;s something i now wish i had not learned... . the markings are all over waikiki and parts of downtown.... ...tourists and others walk past and over them every day having no idea what happened there in the past.... ..and i find myself all the time walking around those spots or taking long ways around a block to avoid walking past them.... ..thankfully i have never actually seen it happen.. ....but i have heard some very horrendous stories from those who have.....

When I lived in Peoria years ago, we had a jumper from one of the towers there. It was not a pretty sight when they hit the ground. Unfortunately for me, I was only 25 feet away when the jumper hit the ground. He was only 25. I've never set foot on that sidewalk again. It is something I never wish to see again.

my dad told us that originally the only reason ems was sent to cases of people who committed suicide by jumping was in order to be of assistance to people who witnessed it or family members who might have been there..... but then with the shortages of medics it became a case of just go and document what happened... verify that the jumper is indeed dead.... and then quickly go back into service for the next emergency call..... .....he said in some cases there were people on scene who had actually been splattered by blood and body fluid when the jumper hit the pavement.... but once the death pronoucement was made on the radio dispatch would throw them back into service and give them no time at all to talk to anyone not physically injured and see if they also needed help.... but he made exceptions in cases where there were children on scene... and especially where there had been a violent death or a murder, and the child who witnessed it was a family member... .he would tell dispatch they were out of service and remain on scene as long as they needed to.... .. i know because as a child i was one of those cases....
