c-17s arriving and honolulu/hickham

When I first moved to Ottawa, there was still an annual airshow here. I also happened to live in the approach path for the north-south-ish runway. First summer I was there, I happened to catch a C-17 flying right overhead. It was something to see. (To say nothing of the fighter and bomber craft that left the next day, too!)

The same airshow also had a C-5 on display, but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see him arrive or leave.

I was pulling line watch at NAS Pensacola one night when a C-5 landed and taxied right up to the edge of the tarmac I was watching. The crew secured the aircraft and walked to the next hangar. Being the good watchstander I was, I figured that C-5 was now part of the aircraft I was responsible for watching. As I approached it, a voice came out of the dark, "Can I help you?" I explained I was the line watch on duty and their aircraft was on my watch zone. The guy stepped off carrying an M-16. He said, "It's alright, I've got this one." We ended up chatting for a bit. They had just flown in from West Germany and were stopped for the night. At first, it was a bit intimidating, him with his M-16 and me with my nightstick and radio. We joked about if I was on watch and some commie invaded I was supposed to throw my nightstick at him and run while calling someone else in.

The C-5 Galaxy has a very distinct sound when it's flying... A sound that once you hear it, you never forget. While I was living in Pendleton OR, the apartment I was living in was on the opposite side of town from the airport. Aircraft flying into Pendleton flew over my apartment, banked 180 on the east side of town landing at the airport. One night, I heard that distinct C-5 drone approaching I knew right away what it was. I looked out my front door and sure enough, a C-5 banked around and landed.

Interesting story. Was it being heavily guarded because of the type of aircraft it is, or because of the cargo it was carrying?

I had 'watch' one night out on the flight line, and only thing they trusted me with was a truck and a radio. Not even an umbrella to hit the enemy with.

Just one guy packing an M-16. I don't remember what he said their mission was or where they were going. Not sure if he was authorized to say and maybe I was smart enough not to ask.

I drive Hwy 12 between Clarkston and Walla Walla all the time. 12 rolls through Dayton WA about half way between Clarkston and Walla Walla. On one trip I saw some motion and from behind one of the hills, a C-5 appears, hugging the ground and following a draw. I guess it was practicing flying below radar detection, something large aircraft from nearby Fairchild AFB are known to do. The rolling hills around Dayton are perfect for that.

we have a clear view from our apartment of the reef runway used by both honolulu intl airport and hickham afb.... there are all kinds of military flights coming and going plus flights of F-22 raptors going on patrols that leave and return at least twice a day... (it use to be F-15s a few years ago)... ....C-17s are also a regular and are based here..... but C5s come and go less frequently.. ..though they are not based here... .....B2 stealth bombers usually come here in groups of 3 when they show up... but they are not based here either.....

once last year a C5 pilot coming into hickham accidently lined up with the infield runway that is only used when the wind changes... he was on final approach and dropping in altitude when the tower waved him off and told him to turn hard left and re-align with the reef runway..... ...that put him flying directly over the city and as it turns out directly over our building...... it was so loud i thought something was about to crash... so ran out onto the lanai just in time to see the belly of the plane flying over us.....the whole apartment was vibrating and the planes size made it seem even closer.... it felt as if i could almost reach up and touch it.... the pilot was reprimanded but i am not sure how.....

but the most awesome thing i saw involving military aircraft happened during RIMPAC when an Indian airforce SU30 came directly over the city at low level then turned straight up and rocketed into the sky.... ...that pilot and the Indian AF in general were also reprimanded and strongly cautioned.......... .......they say incidents like that are one of the risks we take holding a multi-naiton military exercise around the islands..... .... but it;s still fun to watch the action......

the indian SU30 was exactly like this one..... even the same color.... but was not carrying armament...... thankfully...

hickham and honolulu intl are side by side and use the same runways.... ... but they are separated by security fencing..... at the entrances where roads and taxiways go through there are always multiple guards carrying M-16s.... (or actually M-4s now)... ..it;s all far away enough from the airport itself so the general public and airline passengers don;t see them... ... .. but if you are in a unauthorized vehicle that makes a wrong turn or approaches one of these gates accidently or too quickly you see the guards really fast.... and most of the time their weapons are aimed directly at you...... it;s happened to EMS people i know a few times who were responding to emergencies on base.. ... but thankfully they were all authorized and cleared within seconds to proceed.... ..

duncan donuts is on the airport property close to the beginning of the road that leads out to where that video of the reef runway was made....... ..every now and then we pick up a few boxes and go park out there to watch planes come and go and pig out on donuts......😋.. ... one of the guilty pleasures we allow ourselves.... ... 😊

I'm eating an MRE for lunch today.

how was that one?..... we like to use these on hunting trips..... we have tried 8 different menus but not this one yet...... .. they are really good for when we go into places where we can;t build a fire coz they have heating elements in them...... but i have to admit they seem to taste better when you are really really hungry and not just eating them coz it;s meal time..... .. my dad said the old mres from years back all had a small pack of cigarettes in them.... (plus a small book of matches)... . ....but now it;s hard to find one that even has coffee.... ..most of them have gone to adding some type of energy drink instead ..

It was half decent. It would be better if I had some Franks Red Hot sauce to douse on it.

i have seen mre meals that had small bottles of tabasco sauce in them..... ... but i didn;t use it coz i;m just not a fan of tabasco.. ...to me it tastes more sweet than hot..... . i like the taste of cayenne pepper more or even roasted jalapeno..... . ......and i agree the franks red hot sauce would have been much better.... 🌶️.....

Tabasco Sauce sweet? It's made from peppers, salt and vinegar.

Well, okay... There are different kinds of Tabasco Sauce... I have a raspberry chipotle sauce from them that is a bit on the sweet side and not very hot. I purchased that one from the gift shop in Avery Island. I was mildly into Tabasco Sauce until Mrs. Abcaines and I toured their facility last year. Now a bottle sits on my table waiting for me to splash it on my eggs or chicken. Mrs. Abcaines likes their jalapeno sauce.

While we were paying the admission for the factory tour, I mentioned I was a veteran and they asked what branch. When I said Navy, they gave me some of those little bottles with Navy insignia labels on them. I think I'm a fan of Tabasco Sauce largely because of the treatment we received while we were there. I'd go back there in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

BTW, their habanero sauce has a good kick to it and it's loaded with flavor. 😉👍
