I really like this guy.
It goes on and on my friend...This is the thread that never ends...
c-17s arriving and honolulu/hickham
I was pulling line watch at NAS Pensacola one night when a C-5 landed and taxied right up to the edge of the tarmac I was watching. The crew secured the aircraft and walked to the next hangar. Being the good watchstander I was, I figured that C-5 was now part of the aircraft I was responsible for watching. As I approached it, a voice came out of the dark, "Can I help you?" I explained I was the line watch on duty and their aircraft was on my watch zone. The guy stepped off carrying an M-16. He said, "It's alright, I've got this one." We ended up chatting for a bit. They had just flown in from West Germany and were stopped for the night. At first, it was a bit intimidating, him with his M-16 and me with my nightstick and radio. We joked about if I was on watch and some commie invaded I was supposed to throw my nightstick at him and run while calling someone else in.The same airshow also had a C-5 on display, but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see him arrive or leave.
Interesting story. Was it being heavily guarded because of the type of aircraft it is, or because of the cargo it was carrying?I was pulling line watch at NAS Pensacola one night when a C-5 landed and taxied right up to the edge of the tarmac I was watching. The C-5 Galaxy has a very distinct sound when it's flying... A sound that once you hear it, you never forget. While I was living in Pendleton OR, the apartment I was living in was on the opposite side of town from the airport. Aircraft flying into Pendleton flew over my apartment, banked 180 on the east side of town landing at the airport. One night, I heard that distinct C-5 drone approaching I knew right away what it was. I looked out my front door and sure enough, a C-5 banked around and landed.
I had 'watch' one night out on the flight line, and only thing they trusted me with was a truck and a radio. Not even an umbrella to hit the enemy with.I was pulling line watch at NAS Pensacola one night when a C-5 landed and taxied right up to the edge of the tarmac I was watching. Just one guy packing an M-16. I don't remember what he said their mission was or where they were going. Not sure if he was authorized to say and maybe I was smart enough not to ask.Interesting story. we have a clear view from our apartment of the reef runway used by both honolulu intl airport and hickham afb.... there are all kinds of military flights coming and going plus flights of F-22 raptors going on patrols that leave and return at least twice a day... (it use to be F-15s a few years ago)... ....C-17s are also a regular and are based here..... but C5s come and go less frequently.. ..though they are not based here... .....B2 stealth bombers usually come here in groups of 3 when they show up... but they are not based here either.....When I first moved to Ottawa, there was still an annual airshow here. I also happened to live in the approach path for the north-south-ish runway. First summer I was there, I happened to catch a C-17 flying right overhead. It was something to see. (To say nothing of the fighter and bomber craft that left the next day, too!)
The same airshow also had a C-5 on display, but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see him arrive or leave.

hickham and honolulu intl are side by side and use the same runways.... ... but they are separated by security fencing..... at the entrances where roads and taxiways go through there are always multiple guards carrying M-16s.... (or actually M-4s now)... ..it;s all far away enough from the airport itself so the general public and airline passengers don;t see them... ... .. but if you are in a unauthorized vehicle that makes a wrong turn or approaches one of these gates accidently or too quickly you see the guards really fast.... and most of the time their weapons are aimed directly at you...... it;s happened to EMS people i know a few times who were responding to emergencies on base.. ... but thankfully they were all authorized and cleared within seconds to proceed.... ..I was pulling line watch at NAS Pensacola one night when a C-5 landed and taxied right up to the edge of the tarmac I was watching. how was that one?..... we like to use these on hunting trips..... we have tried 8 different menus but not this one yet...... .. they are really good for when we go into places where we can;t build a fire coz they have heating elements in them...... but i have to admit they seem to taste better when you are really really hungry and not just eating them coz it;s meal time..... .. my dad said the old mres from years back all had a small pack of cigarettes in them.... (plus a small book of matches)... . ....but now it;s hard to find one that even has coffee.... ..most of them have gone to adding some type of energy drink instead ..I'm eating an MRE for lunch today.

i looked this over to see if bigfoot was in there somewhere.... .. i was thinking he might be in that dark spot
It was half decent. It would be better if I had some Franks Red Hot sauce to douse on it.how was that one?..... we like to use these on hunting trips..... we have tried 8 different menus but not this one yet...... .. they are really good for when we go into places where we can;t build a fire coz they have heating elements in them...... but i have to admit they seem to taste better when you are really really hungry and not just eating them coz it;s meal time..... .. my dad said the old mres from years back all had a small pack of cigarettes in them....
