Jack Hyles died 25 years ago, today.

I really don't know how/when the Bible signing tradition began, but by the time I got interested in the early seventies, after the sermon and subsequent alter call, there would be lines of people waiting to get their Bible signed and maybe shake hands and actually get to speak directly to the big gun preachers who came through. It was exteremly common. And yes, today I can see how that it likely fed the egos of many and that's never a positive thing in the gospel ministry.

I don’t think it’s anything to feel guilt or regret about, it’s probably just something that was never appropriate to begin with. To be honest, the real fault should lay with those preachers who were willing to do the autograph in the first place. Now, for the preachers who had books published, I don’t see a big issue with an autograph or verse in the book, but even that can foster a celebrity culture. The funny thing is, some of these same IFB folks getting autographs in their Bibles are the same ones throwing stones at preachers like Joel Osteen for being celebrity showboats. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My post was not aimed at your dad, it was aimed at the idea of having fallible men sign God’s Word like it’s a baseball at a game. I stand by what I said, regardless of your opinion.
and i agree with you on that... it;s a bad idea.... i;m sure my dad would agree with you too..... .. but that;s not how you put it in your earlier post.... you said nothing about having a baseball signed...... ... your comparison was to school girls at a backstreet boys concert......🤨.. . ...an innacurate and demeaning comparison...... and if that;s the words you are standing by - just know this.... belittlements of that nature have a way of being revisited back on to you..... in your very own threads...and at times when you may find it the most hurtful... ...choose your words a little more wisely.....

A recent, unflattering review of the ministry and teachings of Jack Hyles:

"Hyles was a master of easy believism and quick prayerism, making millions of people two-fold children of hell. He was a church growth guru, ravening hypocrite, king of promotionalism and numbers-ism. Hyles would say that sin does not need to be repented of, only forgotten. . . .

"Hyles taught that 'all men are mental homosexuals' in a sermon on the text in 2 Cor 12:13-15, and that the only difference between someone who has committed adultery and one who has not is that in the latter case the sin of adultery is 'in remission.' Hyles also says that adultery is not a sin, just a 'mistake.' In light of these lies and heresy, it is unsurprising that overwhelming evidence proves that Jack Hyles committed immoral acts. Nor is it surprising that his son, Dave Hyles, was a sexual monster or that many other leaders at First Baptist of Hammond and Hyles-Anderson College were serial adulterers and molesters and rapists; or that the pastor of First Baptist after Hyles, Jack Schaap, was a child molester who was sentenced to prison for twelve years. . . .

"Hyles refused to discipline people in the church. Pastor Bobby Mitchell stated the following concerning this:

My father attended Pastor’s School at FBCH back around 1980. He personally heard Jack Hyles teach that he would not lead the church to discipline people because he thought he would lose the opportunity to help them in the future if he did. Of course, we understand that Matthew 18 and 1 and 2 Corinthians teaches the exact opposite. . . .
Jack Hyles is an example of everything that is wrong with the (IFB) church movement. To this day, men such as Bob Gray, Sr., and pastor Mike Sullivant out of Pembina Valley Baptist Church of Winkler, Manitoba continue to promote the name and ministry of this ravening wolf in sheep’s clothing. They embrace him and associate with everything Hyles, ignoring reams of evidence that clearly show that Jack Hyles was not who and what he claimed to be. To this day, the FBC of Hammond congregation and its Hyles-Anderson College reveres Jack Hyles and his statue in front of the school. Past scandals are ignored, and First Baptist pastors and congregants continue to do the work of the ministry as Jack Hyles did it for forty-two years. Nothing has changed.

I’m a little confused because your previous post seemed like a defense of the 70s/80s fad of Bible autographs. Obviously I have no way of knowing whether your dad would feel one way or the other since he’s not on the forum. In fact, I’d already made my feelings about the topic quite clear before you voluntarily made that information public.

That was just a colorful attempt at humor. Nothing evil or hurtful was intended by my statement. I guess I could have picked an older example of Elvis or the Beatles, or a more modern example, but given the average age of folks on this forum, I highly doubt it would resonate. But yes, I’ve seen grown men (and women) of varying ages treat certain visiting preachers, evangelists, and Christian college presidents like celebrities. I believe on the forum it’s sometimes referred to as the “man-o-gawd.”

I’ve been ridiculed and jeered at on this forum many times, called a Catholic lover, various ridicules related to Jimmy Carter, etc. Maybe I should choose my words a little more wisely, but you should also work on something yourself: not personalizing words that aren’t even meant for you.

actually... your mention of elvis presley reminded me..... i mispoke in my post when i said my dad had never been to a concert of any kind..... .. he did go to an elvis presley concert in dallas texas in 1975..... he took his little sister there because she was too young to go by herself.... ... but they did not try to get an autograph... ... she even said the concert was a little disappointing coz elvis looked fat - slow - and sloppy..... was even hard to understand..... not how she imagined after seeing his movies..... so i stand corrected....

i still have a hard time believing my dad stood in line to get a preachers signature...
.... i can;t remember him standing in line for anything... .. not even a movie ticket...
.. (he usually sat on a bench and smoked a cigar while we stood in line for the tickets)...

.. but all this talk of power hungry preachers signing bibles reminded me of this.....

My father, who died in 2019, did that for decades.
i wish we knew where his grandmothers bible ended up...... he said when his grandmother died his mother was given her bible.... but when his mother died nobody could find it..... that was only a few years ago...... that bible had a lot of my dads family history written into the fly leaf pages.... and also history of sermons his grandmother sat through.... lot of entries of j frank norris and john r rice sermons.... plus many others i never heard of..... . it was an old king james bible probably printed some time in the 1890s .. but if you wanted to know what a certain preacher might have preached on a given day - if she was at church it was in there..... ..pretty amazing......

but these days he goes with me to my sunday school and sometimes to the regular church service..... problem is it;s all in hawaiian and he doesn;t speak or understand much hawaiian at all...... but i have a really old dual language bible printed in both english and hawaiian side by side that he carries and follows along the messages with... . .. not sure how well that;s working for him but either way no markings ...notations.... or writing at all is allowed in that bible...... it;s completely unmarked and i want it to stay that way... . the one i use at church and sunday school is all hawaiian language and it;s not marked either.... . any notes i feel i need to make are done on a separate note pad........

All of this discussion about autographs reminded me of the “Trump Bible.” For only $1,000, everyone can now get a Holy Bible signed by President Donald Trump. No waiting in lines required. https://godblesstheusa.com/products...QCUw5Y8mt62PdHu3E5GhSd0_yHOuE9MVRfoIo22uZ2c6D

Forgetting that it's a Bible, is the signature authentic and not a print? Traditionally, presidential signatures have some value. The signature would have more value than the putative blessing 🤭

I *think* the $1,000 versions are authentic signatures. The $60 versions are not. I’m not really sure though…reading mixed reviews and opinions.

Call me once brainwashed, but at the time, I didn't give it much thought. I just admired those men and I wanted their signature. I don't know, maybe it was much more strange than I thought at the time.

he indicated he already experienced the "or else"......
