This textual variant does not change any cardinal belief of Christians ? but, if original, it would send about seven tons of dispensational literature to the flames.

When it comes to 666, it doesn't matter whether you are Covenant or Dispensationalist. Those given to numerology.

I don't know of any serious dispensational work that ties 666 to Nero.

Who cares. I don't. I gave up such things. In my humble opinion, there is something wrong with those that get wrapped up in trying to find the end times all around them. Jesus has promised to return and He has promised to be with me throughout all things. Who cares how smart someone thinks they are by figuring out exactly what 616 or 666 means.

I agree.  When the time comes, whenever that is, it may be (MAY be, not WILL be) obvious how to apply 616 or 666.  But I don't think you can use it to predict anything.  I'm guessing that when the man of sin is revealed, then it might be possible to see his connection to 616 or 666.
