Amos, Prosperity and America

I have been looking into the background of the book of Amos. I find some interesting parallels to our society. Plenty of haves. No shortage of have nots. Lots and lots of material wealth. God sent Amos to point out that there was serious injustice occurring. Not a popular message nor was it well received.

All scripture is given ... I wonder how Amos' message applies to our modern life.

Their refusal to repent led to the Assyrian captivity. The mixing of religions during that time is how the hated Samaritans came to be. Kind of interesting that their sin was lack of compassion and Jesus taught that a Samaritan could show more compassion than the religious leaders of his day.

Son's wife get heavily involved in Republican politics. While holding position in party leadership wife makes comment that the problem in Michigan is that all the workers are overpaid. Son decides to run for governor. Democrats drag wife's quote out at every opportunity to show that she (and by extension, he) is disconnected from the reality of the people whom he would seek to govern. This was prior to the economic meltdown and the results of that.

Me thinks that Amos would find it hard to listen to a double billionaire heiress explain that the problem with the economy is overpaid labor. After all, she felt zero impact in her income or lifestyle as a result of the "great recession".

Now, I know that one of the likely responses will be that it is people like her that make jobs available to the labor force. That would be a good description of her father and her father-in-law. As for her, she has no career record that includes creating anything of value or generating jobs. Okay, that is an overstatement. She does have her staff and her security force so she has created those jobs.

And I have a question for you; why did God let a "democrap" like Amos write a book of the OT decrying the mistreatment of poor people? If "All scripture is given ...." I would think that we have an obligation to seek out what Amos is teaching. This is true even if it goes against our political idolatry.
