Anybody following the unrest in Ferguson Missouri?

in my opinion a person who would call you racist for wearing a kimono is revealing themselves to be the real racist instead........does he also get upset if a  an asian forsakes the kimono and dresses in a cowboy hat and boots?..... ... it;s really sad if that kind of thing is happening on the mainland......

I kid you not. Last year at some music awards show, Katy Perry performed a number wearing a Chinese-styled outfit, and brought the wrath of the Sensitive Left on her head. Same thing happened to Avril Lavigne earlier this year, when she made a J-pop inspired single and video (she has a huge fan base in Japan). It's termed "cultural appropriation" and it's a real hot-button topic in white-guilt circles. I don't see why wearing a Chinese dress is inappropriate cultural appropriation, but eating Chinese food (with, as you suggest, chopsticks) is not, but no one ever whines about the Manchu Wok booth at the food court. (The little devil Ransom on my right shoulder wants me to tell my Chinese friends that they are being racist when they speak English, too, just to see what would happen.)

and why was it necessary for some of the participants to dress like indians?....... were they simply trying to hide their own identities?...... trying to cast the blame on a group that had nothing to do with it?............ some other reason?.............. that;s an instance where i really would agree that dressing like a difference race or nationality you are not a member of, really would be at the very least wrong......

My understanding of the situation is that this is actually a common misunderstanding. "Indian dress" didn't mean the traditional regalia of, say, Mohawk Indians. It typically meant something like wearing blankets and covering the face in soot - in other words, an outfit suitable for guerilla warfare, as used by the French and their Indian allies during the French and Indian War. The Boston Tea Party was trying to camouflage themselves and obscure their identities, not disguise themselves as Indians.

Which brings up something that's been sticking in my craw for a while now.  Why doesn't Ho Ho Chinese BBQ serve Greek food?  Are they racist or something?  I went in and ordered a Gyro and they refused to serve me one.  I demand they serve me a Gyro or else I'm going to sue them for violating my civil rights.

i know you are joking..... but white people from the mainland have come here before... walked into local businesses .... and done things just as ignorant as that....... even though this is part of the united states a lot of u.s. mainlanders still think of hawaii as a foreign country...... and the typical "ugly american" has reared it;s head here more than once...... but it;s not often those who come here as tourists do it.... it;s usually those who move here to take up residence........

It happens here, too.  I was in a Texas Roadhouse a couple months ago (a steak house).  The father of the family at the table next to me wanted to speak to the manager or owner to find out why they don't serve chips and salsa instead of/in addition to fresh bread and cinnamon butter.  It didn't matter to him that Texas Roadhouse isn't a Mexican restaurant.  He insisted that every Texas restaurant serves chips and salsa, and so this one was violating some sort of unspoken law. 

Maybe he was drinking, I don't know.  He was pretty obnoxious.  I was tempted to lean over and say, "You can throw a tomato, er, stone anywhere in Texas and hit a Mexican restaurant.  How about you put yourself out of my misery and go to one of them?"

but some of the things i;ve seen mainlanders do here is ask for an american waitress who speaks "real" english..... i have actually seen things like that happen several times..... or ordering something off the menu without asking what it was... then turning their nose up at it once it arrives and asking the non white server.... "do you people really eat this s***?... what is it?... cat?"

Do they eat it, anyway?  My wife was a waitress for a while, and she used to laugh when customers complained that the food was terrible, yet when she went to clear the table, the plates were empty.

in that instance i described... no he didn;t.... he got up and left leaving a full plate on the table..... i think it was char siu pork that he ordered..... and he had obviously never seen it before much less tried it..... he was all the way across the room from us but everybody in the place could hear him..... the waitress ask him if he wanted something else but he just ignored her........ it doesn;t happen here that often.... because like you say... even if people look at something and think they won;t like it...once they try it they find they actually do like it and they clean their plate..... it was all his loss.... but the impression he left on others was pretty bad......
