Bob Ross is Out

This goes to show how decrepit our society is. When courts allow a provision for a defendant to say, "I'm not admitting guilt but you'll likely convict me based on the evidence." How stupid have we become?

We don't have a nolo contendere plea in Canada, but I can see the rationale behind it. A defendant may believe himself not guilty of a crime, but cannot contest the charges, so he enters a no contest plea--not admitting guilt, but admitting he cannot defend himself against the charge. It also protects him in a resulting civil suit, because typically it cannot be used against him by a plaintiff as an admission of guilt, as a guilty plea could be.

The head scratcher for me is someone taking the rap (fines/imprisonment) for a crime they contend they didn't commit.

Well... as others have noted, the "no contest" is usually a plea bargain. He isn't convicted of anything, but he gets to be punished as if guilty. It probably saves the justice system considerable funds and time, and the accused can truthfully say that he has not been convicted of any crime.

But a church should have more wisdom that to allow someone who pleaded this way to become a deacon. This doesn't fit the "blamelss" qualification.

Well, perhaps he was afraid that he would get convicted even though innocent, so he figured it's better to take the fines/imprisonment than to lose a case.

But, yes, I would rather fight if I were falsely charged.
