I know we have a good time making fun of some of the academics at HAC.  Looking from the outside in, the Hammond Baptist Schools seemed just the opposite.  They seemed to be strong academically and the graduates seemed academically well prepared.  Is this just my opinion or is it factual?

Can't find the rating info, think it is post on this forum.

HB ranked 3rd in academics for private schools in our area.
Andraen was first and HB was 3rd if I remember correctly.

Yes it is quit good comparatively.

I can't speak for recent years but when I attended, the academics were atrocious. It really hit home as my kids got older and needed help with homework that I had never even seen before. And I mean in middle school. Just last week my daughter couldn't figure out an 8th grade math problem so my wife and I had to get her to send a picture of the problem to her brother so he could talk her through it over the phone.

I proofread much of my kids' reports for grammatical stuff and subject comprehension and much of the material is brand new to me.

I remember in high school I had a friend who was called "Professor" by many. In 11th grade he had to drop out and attend Lake Central for financial reasons. Though he mads As at HB, he had to go to remedial classes.

I do feel HB was pretty strong in the English and grammar areas, even stronger than my kids' public schools. But for me, seems much was lacking in other subjects. Hopefully that has changed.

There are around 750 high schools in the state of Indiana ( 570 public schools and 166 private).

47 out of 750 sounds pretty good to me. It sounds even better if you consider the average private high school tuition in the state is $10,000 or more and the top schools on that list charge $20,000 plus.
At number 43 HB High school is a steal.

What factors were used in ranking the schools? I think I saw somewhere it was surveys and test scores. Does HB educate special needs kids? Do they accept and test kids with Dyslexia and Autism? If not, they really can't be compared to a public school that services a completely different demographic of student. You can't compare apples to oranges.

As a parent, I would be impressed with the ranking (because my kids don't need any special services anyway). As an educator, I don't see how this ranking is any indication of the school's actual performance.

Hammond does not provide extensive programs for children with special needs so I would not think they would be your first choice for a child with special needs. I also think school testing scores would not be your first choice in those situations.

On the other hand if special needs is not a factor in your home you are likely to care how a school is ranked.

Not sure I get the point you are trying to make. Most private schools will rank higher because they are made up of students who chose to be there.

Yes, they even have a special program that teaches them to read.

What would you use as a measure of a high performing school?

Standardized academic testing, I don't mean the new common core, The older standardized testing used in the days when students in the 8th grade did work equivalent to today's college sophomores.

The single class that had the biggest positive impact on my life was Typing with Mrs. Augustine. I chose to take typing over a Shop class simply because I knew I was going to be too cheap to hire a college girl to type my papers when I got to college.

With the necessary incorporation of the computer in daily life, having this typing skill has literally benefited me to the point of using it just about every day of my life. I'm grateful for it even though it was somewhat laborious back in the day.
