A colleague at work and I got into a conversation about Christmas and I made the off-hand comment that I hate Christmas. She look at me like I had just slapped her across her face as hard as I could. She was like, "how can you hate Christmas? It's all about Christ. If you hate Christmas then you hate Christ." I tried to explain that the part I hate is the over commercialization of Christmas, not the religious aspects of it. She replied by saying (words to the effect) that gift giving is at the very core of Christmas, what with the wise men bringing gifts to baby Jesus and to reject that is also a rejection of Christ. I think she's wrong, and told her as much and she basically accused me of not even being saved.  :o

So, I'd like to hear your thoughts. Can someone love Jesus but yet hate Christmas?

:)

Well, I guess so.

But here's something I said to someone else who made the same claim:

What you hate is THEIR Christmas, but you don't celebrate THEIR Christmas, you celebrate YOUR Christmas.

Didn't you tell her the wise men didn't bring gifts until Jesus was about 2 years old?

I have to agree with you here.  The only thing really positive about it is the fact that no matter how secular people try to make it, the very name itself brings the Lord Jesus Christ front-and-center to the world. Capitalism will never let Christmas tie, it is way too big of a money maker.

Offhand, I cannot think of any passage in the NT that even implies that loving an annual celebration of Jesus' birth is a sign of genuine salvation.

I'd say she's off by a country mile.  :D

I attended an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church (Ruckmanite) that taught if anyone did celebrate Christmas they probably weren't saved.  We actually had literature that came out and said people like Bing Crosby (White Christmas) and the world in general were caught up  in the throes of Satan because they practiced paganism.  We also didn't celebrate Easter or birthdays , wear wedding rings etc.

Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:  Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

As to the OP, I loathe the commercialization of Christmas too, but I still like it that Christ is at least somewhat in the discussion amongst our culture.  I fear with the rapid secularization of America that it won't be long that telling people the good news of the gospel will be hate speech. :-X

That's exactly what I was going to ask!

Go back and tell her Christ was not born on December 25...then you will really be a heretic!  LOL

love the idea of celebrating the birth of out Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

I don't like the commercialism of the celebration.  I do not like santa clause and my children know there is no such thing.  they know the true reason for the celebration.

I can see that.  to a degree.  celebrating or not celebrating a holiday is not a condition salvation.....not saying it is or is not a sin...but saved people sin all the time.

but I do think that satan has used reindeer and santa and elves to take the focus off of Christ when we celebrate Christmas.

The birth of Christ should be celebrated everyday...as well as the crucifixion and resurrection.  I don't believe that trading gifts is necessarily and bad thing long as you don't let that become the focal point of a get together or make it a stressful situation (as so many of us do)

having said that.......anything that take away from Christ......santa.....presents.....elves....is 100% sin...

Weirdest part was probably that sign out front that said "Kingdom Hall", huh?

earnestly contend

The tradition of Christmas originates in mythology "sacrificed unto idols"

earnestly contend

I can only imagine the chaos when they caught wind of Stryper.

Wait?  Santa is sin?

yes....santa is sin.

Jesus said that you are either with Him....or against Him...no in between....even when it is difficult for us to determine which is for Him and which isn't...
celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ....we should all do all the time....

santa clause is part of the commercialization of Christmas.  the story of santa and the presents and the reindeer and elves and north pole takes the spot light of the reason we have Christmas AWAY from Jesus and His birth.  so....going back to what Jesus himself said...your either with Him or against Him....if something serves to take glory from Him...it is sin

very well disguised thou!!! cause people will say "well its fun for the children"  satan never looks ugly!! always looks good...and appealing...

also the whole "Christmas is about family...and spending time with those you love" WRONG!!!  not saying those are not good things...but that is also a clever way for satan to make taking the spotlight off of Christ seem ok and un noticeable....

even thou santa is supposedly form st nick that did great things for children.....he shouldn't be hijacking the celebration of Jesus' birth...

?

also to add to that!!! the bible says for us " lie not one to another"  its impossible to have santa clause and not lie to your children to have him....same goes for the easter bunny and tooth fairy and all them sneaky lil tricks of the disgusting Lucifer that are wolves in sheeps clothing....fools gold......good from far but far from good...

satan is a tricky joker...but we as Christians have to be on the look out for any of the countless things he uses to keep our eyes off the prize.....our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!!!

The thought going through my head is that this year I am only using the phrase "Happy Holidays"!
