I recently read this statement "I contend that rock music is itself immoral (bad) rather than a-moral (neutral)."

Now music is defined by this individual as "...I generally mean instrumental music. Lyrics may accompany music but they are not music in the strict sense by which I mean by the term."

So is instrumental rock music immoral?

instrumental rock music immoral, nope, just lightly say things about scriptures and that makes it Holy worship music that has nothing to do with worldly rock music it becomes "Christian" Rock music.

Kinda like transubstantiation.

Could you, maybe, rewrite that and use a little more punctuation?  I'm usually pretty good at figuring out textspeak, but this one has me baffled.

:)

There u go, is this better?

Immoral? No, but it could be an entrapment for some to sin so each person needs to determine what might entrap himself and avoid that issue. But he should not expect it to be regulated on those to whom it doesn't affect in that manner.

I remember in the '90s listening to a local Christian station in California when they played the Imperials' Free The Fire but they edited it to cut out the guitar solo.  Apparently they felt that would offend their audience.

Music is a form of communication, and as such, has moral components.  So to keep it brief, I'd say that the author's intent is the most germane point for determining a music's intended message.

What is being communicated by the first simple drum beat on the video linked below?

I don't think so. But then again I don't think rock music is immoral.

People are immoral...

Apart from that the drummer apparently doesn't read music?

Is this instrumental rock music unacceptable?

How about this non-rock instrumental?

Now that is cool.

It depends.  I'd rather hear Hendrix's Amazing Grace than some generic guitar rock solo played by a believer that does nothing for me - like the musical equivalent of speaking in tongues. Music should honor God but also help the listener.

David played instrumental music to soothe Saul, so we must concede at the very least that music can change moods.

But, to what extent can we place morality on it?

If some music is immoral, what does moral music sound like?

Music can be highly subjective to cultures as well.  Traditionally romantic music in one culture would hardly illicit a whimper to someone of another culture.

Subjective, subjective, subjective. (In my book)

It doesn't always change moods.

And the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.  And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night. 1 Samuel 19:9-10

I really need to burn my new complete work of The Carpenter's....that's immoral music right there.

Before I enter this tango with you :D I'd like to get a minor clarification before proceeding.  With your question and linked video are you denying that music communicates a message?

The alphabet, viewed in isolation, communicates *something* (relating to intelligence and design), albeit at an infintesimally reductionistic level.  But when those letters are composed, strung together by a moral creature, they form a coherent message (usually :D) that has some form of morality attached to it.  Musical notes can be thought of in the same manner.  And beyond that introductory qualifying statement, instrumental music most certainly does effect the emotions.  Are you denying that emotions are a part of morality?
