Question. Do you allow yourself to get into the situation where you are alone in a car with the opposite sex? For example - taking a woman to work (car-pool), or drive an older lady to Church, or maybe help a woman get to a doctors appointment.

Recently my wife needed a ride to the doctors, I was at work, and the pastor offered to drive her. He drive 20+ miles out of his way to pick up another brother before getting my wife - he has a rule about being alone with a woman in his car.

I appreciated this I suppose. But. I never questioned his integrity, nor my wife's.

I drive the opposite sex alone in my car all the time. And besides - these days - the same sex could be a problem. Right?

What are your thoughts about such rules?

Up the person. I wouldn't have a problem with a women riding in my truck. I wouldn't drive 20 miles out of the way to pick up a witness. Witnesses..... can lie.

I do think its a good idea for Pastors to not attempt to meet privately with women for "christian counseling". First, most pastors aren't qualified to do such things. Second, it creates an intimacy with the client that often professionals can only deal with. If a wife can't talk to her husband.... she certainly doesn't need to talk to her pastor. Group counseling or no counseling at all.

I don't mind them, as long as they are not taken to ridiculous extremes; if my wife breaks her leg outside, and I'm not there, I would hope that our pastor neighbor would pick her up and get her to treatment without worrying about such silliness.

But people do have nasty minds, and it probably behooves a pastor to take precautions -- look at at the scandal at WHBC with TV in texting a young woman in his church. The texts were no more than friends would send to each other, but most people assume that he was "grooming" her to eventually get her into an illicit relationship.  (Given his past history, this could well be).

I remember, some years back, a married man and a married woman (not to each other) who seemed to spend all of their free time with each other.  It was raising a lot of comment and certainly looked odd.  Turns out that she was having trouble with her husband, and he was merely being a friend, but rumors were flying.

I am friends with women of varying ages, but I would not take them out to dinner alone.

I discussed this once with a woman I know and she said that she felt comfortable with me, and that I was not sending out any signals of trying to flirt or be more than just a friend.  That was good to know.
