John 3:16

I could care less who another person's spouse rides with.

Seems the problem we have is not what either person does but when that person decides their preference is a measure of holiness. But, as usual, you've completely missed our point.

I didn't miss anything, and as usual, you deflect and offer up disingenuous gobblety-gook.  I saw nobody make this "rule" a measure of holiness, but keep tilting at fundamentalist windmills Don.

We agree.

Nothing like allowing liberty of conscience.

I'm all for allowing liberty of conscience, as long as others will respect my liberty to laugh at the "conscience" of someone who won't drive his wife home because he's worried about his reputation as a faithful husband.

Pastor Lee Roberson told the story of once doing some hospital visitation.  While at the hospital, he met a group of church ladies that were visiting as well.  Among those were his wife.  The ladies were leaving to go home as was Roberson.

The ladies asked him if he wanted to take his wife home,  "No, I arrived alone and I'll leave alone."  He also told us he would never drive around alone with a long-haired male in the car.

Extreme?  Well, it depends on if your reputation is worth anything.  All it takes is one person to see Roberson in a car with a woman when he arrived alone to start vicious rumors.  He died with an impeccable reputation.  He worked at it.

But let's pretend like he wasn't making it a measure of holiness.

Satire and biting cynicism, it's your thing.  I like to allow people their peccadillos, within reason, so long as they don't foist their peculiarities on me.

I agree with you that the Roberson quote seems odd, but at the end of the day I'd rather have somebody who takes piety a bit too serious rather than the apathetic nature of what so much today characterizes Christianity.

You've added "mind reader" to your list of accomplishments I see.

Fundys are often certainly guilty of hobby horses, and judgmental rule-making.  In the quote you cited, as odd as it may seem, I don't think you can establish anything as fact that Roberson expected this to be an outward show of false piety.

Along with pretending like he wasn't making it a measure of holiness, let's also pretend that not riding alone in a car with your wife is anything but false piety.

Declaring it by fiat, or simply restating it doesn't make it any less a figment of your overactive imagination.

FTR, if I show up somewhere alone and the place I show up at my wife happens to be there, I will not only walk up to her and give her a kiss but I will also leave with her alone in my vehicle, and go home.

Just sayn.

I find that I can't take that level of too-serious "piety" too seriously.

Satire and biting cynicism, it's your thing.

My thing? Roberson's level of absurdity is its own satire.  That's not holiness. It's the fear of men's opinions.

I don't need to spend time socializing with other women.  Sometimes, on break, I converse with other women who are present.  I believe in being courteous to others, even strangers.  However, when asked if I wanted to ride along with a group of ladies to a work luncheon, I respectfully declined.  I would rather listen to sports radio in my car than them.  If a lady was broken down, I might stop to offer assistance, but do not feel comfortable planning time alone with another lady alone.  Why is that odd?
Not wanting to spend time with your female co-workers isn't odd. It was the comment of "My commitment to my wife's security is greater than any perceived need to spend time socializing with other women" as if it wasn't your choice to even be able to give a woman a ride. That's what stood out to me.

I work with many women.  I attend small group with adults of both gender.  I socialize with my family.  Why do you spend your social time alone with other women?
I am 44, you may be alot younger. You work with women on a regular 9-5 basis, that's different. I am glad I don't. To dodge the female gender, that generally doesn't work in the long run. Building a house on sand. JMHO

I don't go out of my way to be alone with any females. A little over a week ago, my wife had to work as did my Dad. And others I asked. So a female employee drove since my eyes aren't good for long periods of time. She had her own hotel room next door to mine in Crescent City, CA. Hung out in my room for a bit, laid her head on my chest for a bit while watching Bewitched.I logged into the FFF too real quick too. Not everyone is attracted to one another or maybe I'm ugly  :o  to her. My wife is a major nypho so for me to lay with her sets her off into arousal... she nuturing but it is always intertwined with sex. Never once was it different. Not an excuse, I do watch it it just happens to work with this one person. Odd to some folks but who cares. It must align with scripture though. Imho, to totally cut off human contact (like socializing) with females usually just puts you at greater risk. So can the opposite situation of course, getting too laxed.  JMHO, and everyone's got one

If your wife says she wants to make love in the back seat of the car, and she wants YOU to drive, is that a bad sign?

She's not riding alone with another guy, since you're driving...
Is she's sorting socks correctly? that's what counts...

I'm from the ole school and I don't roll like that. Like I told a man that I was working with years ago, there's only one man that my wife fixes a cup of coffee for and ur looking at him.

:-)

But that's just me.

I'm perfectly fine with that being you; I have a problem when you insist that YOUR way is "the" right way and everyone else should do things the way you do.

Holy Cow...some of these comments.

On occasion I have to travel out of town with female co-workers...in the same car and even stay at the same hotel and eat across from them at the same table.

Some of you people need a good slap up side the head with a big dose of reality thrown in.

In another thread about a pastor texting a women, you said that "real men" should have beaten the pastor up.... (clearly, I'm paraphrasing).
